Top Executive Coaching Firms

Executive coaching is one-to-one work with a senior leader on how they lead: decision making, delegation, executive presence, board and investor relationships, and the behaviors their peers and reports find hard to work with. Boards and HR heads usually commission it when a founder becomes CEO of a scaling company, a VP steps into a first C-suite role, a talented leader is derailing, or a successor needs readying before a planned handover.

The listing above shows the coaches and coaching firms that do this work. Compare them on the seniority of leaders they have coached, whether they run structured 360 feedback, and how they report progress to a sponsor without breaking the coachee's confidence.

Hiring Executive Coaching companies

What the work covers, how to judge a partner and what drives the price.

What an executive coaching engagement involves

A typical engagement starts with a three-way contracting meeting between the coach, the executive and a sponsor, usually the CEO, board chair or CHRO. They agree the two or three behaviors the coaching will target and how success will be judged. The coach then gathers data: stakeholder interviews, a 360 survey, and often a psychometric tool such as Hogan, DISC or the Leadership Circle Profile.

Regular sessions follow, in person or by video, with the coach observing real meetings where useful and checking in with stakeholders midway. Engagements close with a repeat of the feedback round and a handover plan so gains survive the coach's exit.

Besides individual programs, many firms offer leadership team coaching, onboarding coaching for newly hired executives, and coaching bundled with a wider leadership development curriculum.

FAQ

Executive Coaching FAQs

Short answers to what buyers ask before hiring a Executive Coaching company.

Question not covered? Ask our team

An executive coach helps a senior leader change specific leadership behaviors that limit their effectiveness, using feedback from colleagues, assessment data and regular one-to-one sessions. The coach does not do the executive's job or give strategy advice; the work is about how the leader thinks, decides and works with others.

Executive coaching cost depends on the executive's level, the coach's experience and how much 360 feedback and stakeholder work the program includes. Most firms listed here either set no minimum or start engagements between $1,000 and $5,000, while a few set floors of $10,000 to $25,000 for leadership team work.

Executive coaching is individual and confidential, built around one leader's goals and feedback. Leadership development usually means group programs, workshops and curricula for a cohort of managers. Many firms in this category offer both, using coaching to reinforce what a development program teaches.

Programs are scoped in phases: contracting and assessment, a run of regular sessions, a midpoint stakeholder check, and a closing feedback round. Length depends on the goals agreed and how often the leader can meet, so ask each coach how they set and review the timeline in their proposal.

The coaches listed here most often work with business services firms, financial services, information technology, manufacturing and medical organizations. Government agencies and non-profits also appear among their clients, usually for senior leaders taking on larger teams or public accountability.

The executive coaches on this page are most often listed in Houston, San Francisco, Toronto, Vancouver and Dallas. Much coaching runs by video, so location matters mainly if the executive wants in-person sessions or the coach to observe meetings on site.
