Top Third-Party Logistics (3PL) Companies

A third-party logistics provider takes over the physical side of selling: receiving inbound containers, storing inventory, picking and packing orders, shipping them through negotiated carrier rates, and processing returns. Brands hire a 3PL when order volume outgrows their own garage or warehouse, when they need a location closer to customers, when retailers impose routing guides and labeling rules, or when peak season swamps their team.

The providers on this page differ most in what they ship: parcel-sized ecommerce orders, pallet freight to retailers, or both. Compare them on the order profiles they already handle, the warehouse management system and integrations they run, and where their buildings sit relative to your customers.

Hiring Third-Party Logistics companies

What the work covers, how to judge a partner and what drives the price.

What third-party logistics companies handle

Core services are receiving and putaway, storage by pallet, shelf or bin, order picking and packing, kitting and assembly, labeling, and outbound shipping through the provider's carrier accounts. Many add freight management for inbound and outbound loads, B2B fulfillment that meets retailer routing guides and EDI requirements, returns inspection and restocking, and value-added work such as gift wrapping or subscription box assembly.

The technology layer matters as much as the building. A 3PL connects its warehouse management system to your store, marketplace or ERP so orders flow in and tracking flows back, and gives you a portal for inventory levels, lot and expiry tracking, and billing detail.

Onboarding typically runs through a discovery of SKUs and order profile, a pricing proposal, integration testing, a first inventory transfer and a supervised go-live. After that the relationship is governed by service levels: order accuracy, same-day ship cutoffs and dock-to-stock time for receipts.

Third-Party Logistics FAQs

Short answers to what buyers ask before hiring a Third-Party Logistics company.

Question not covered? Ask our team

A third-party logistics company stores your inventory in its warehouse and ships orders on your behalf. It receives inbound goods, picks and packs orders from your store or ERP, ships through its carrier accounts, handles returns and reports inventory levels through a portal. Many also manage freight, retail compliance and kitting.

3PL pricing is usage-based: receiving fees per pallet or carton, monthly storage per pallet or bin, a pick-and-pack fee per order and item, packaging, and postage at negotiated rates, often with a monthly minimum. Volume, product size, SKU count and special handling drive the total. Most providers here set no minimum or a minimum project of $1,000 to $5,000.

A business usually moves to a 3PL when shipping orders in-house is taking time from selling, when storage space or staff runs out, when it needs faster delivery to customers far from its current location, or when a retailer requires EDI and routing-guide compliance. The trade-off is less direct control, which a clear service-level agreement offsets.

A 3PL runs warehousing and order fulfillment, holding your stock and shipping it to customers. A freight forwarder arranges the movement of cargo between countries or regions, booking ocean, air or truck space and handling customs documentation. Many importers use a forwarder to bring containers to a 3PL, and some large providers offer both.

Listed 3PLs most often serve ecommerce, supply chain and transport, consumer products, manufacturing, retail and automotive businesses. Direct-to-consumer brands lean on parcel fulfillment and returns, manufacturers on pallet storage and distribution, and automotive parts sellers on SKU-heavy inventory control.

Listed third-party logistics providers are concentrated in Toronto, Mississauga, Houston, Kyiv and Shenzhen. For a 3PL, the location of the warehouse decides shipping zones and delivery times to your customers, so check where each provider actually operates buildings, which may differ from its office address.
