Hiring Lighting Design companies

What the work covers, how to judge a partner and what drives the price.

What lighting design firms deliver

Work follows the architectural phases. Concept design sets the intent, often with renderings and mood studies. Schematic design and design development produce lighting layouts on reflected ceiling plans, photometric calculations in AGi32, DIALux or Relux, fixture schedules and a controls narrative covering dimming, scenes, daylight harvesting and occupancy sensing on protocols such as DALI or DMX. Construction documents add details, specifications and code compliance calculations against ASHRAE 90.1, the IECC or California Title 24, with support for LEED and WELL credits where targeted.

Construction administration is where good firms earn their fee: reviewing contractor submittals and substitutions, approving mock-ups, attending site visits, and aiming, focusing and programming scenes before handover.

Engagements are usually a full-service commission alongside the architect, a concept-only or design-only scope, a retrofit study, or specialist work on facades, gardens and grounds, museums, theaters or events. Some firms also design stage and event lighting for productions and brand experiences.

A lighting design firm plans how a building or space is lit. It sets the lighting concept, models light levels and glare, specifies fixtures and controls, documents layouts and code compliance, reviews contractor submittals and substitutions, and aims and programs the system on site before handover. It works alongside the architect, interior designer and electrical engineer.

Lighting designers charge per phase, against the construction budget or floor area, or hourly, with construction administration included or billed per visit. Space size, building type, controls, facade scope and site visits drive the fee. Many firms in this listing set no minimum or a $1,000 minimum, while established practices start at $100,000 or $250,000.

A lighting designer decides what the light should look and feel like and which fixtures and controls achieve it; an electrical engineer designs the power, circuits and wiring that feed them. The designer models light levels, glare and color and protects the design during construction. The engineer sizes circuits and panels and stamps electrical drawings. Most commercial projects need both.

Free lighting design from a supplier can work for simple spaces, but it rarely stays brand-neutral. The layout is often built around the products the supplier sells, and the designer has no duty to defend quality during value engineering. For hospitality, retail, facades or high-profile offices, an independent lighting design firm usually protects the result better.

A lighting design project runs as long as the architectural project it belongs to, moving through concept, schematic design, design development, construction documents and construction administration. Fixture lead times, substitution disputes, late changes to ceilings or finishes and delayed commissioning are what extend the lighting work.
