Stanford University - Windhover Contemplative Cent

The Windhover Contemplative Center provides a peaceful space for meditation, relaxation, and quiet reflection on Stanford University's campus. It features five paintings from the Windhover series by artist and former faculty member Nathan Oliveira, who envisioned this space to showcase his work. Although Oliveira taught at Stanford for over 30 years, he passed away in 2010, prior to the project's initiation. The architectural firm Auerbach Glasow designed the lighting to be soft and discreet, aimed at highlighting the artwork. Each painting is positioned beneath an adjustable louvered skylight that also hides the lighting fixtures. The art takes center stage both inside and outside the building. From the interior, the transparent design allows views of the paintings alongside the surrounding landscape, and the central courtyard enhances natural daylight throughout the space. Windhover is situated on a site that is sensitive to endangered species, bordered by an oak grove on one side. The lighting on the grounds is carefully controlled and targeted, illuminating pathways and artworks. Additionally, the site includes a reflection pool, a contemplative garden, and a granite labyrinth.

Auerbach Glasow provided guidance on the technical aspects and practical implementation of these bespoke designs while also considering the comfort and visual needs of elderly individuals. A dimming system was implemented to enhance the breathtaking night views from dining areas and other essential spaces, accommodating a variety of activities. Careful attention to detail in the public spaces fosters a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere that encourages social interaction among residents.

With approximately 1.8 million annual visitors from around the world, it is a significant attraction in California. One of the building's main highlights is the Open Sea tank, which holds one million gallons of seawater and is the largest exhibit at the Aquarium. Auerbach Glasow was brought in to refresh the original design—also created by them—by incorporating modern lighting and additional features. Through a series of on-site prototypes, the final design was achieved with some adjustments to the initial concept. The most notable change involved utilizing a new high color rendering metal halide lamp, which greatly enhanced the look of the marine life. Furthermore, the number of striking narrow beam "sunlight shafts" was increased, and a directional fan was installed at the exhibit's top to create ripples on the water's surface, enhancing the light effects as they moved through the water.
