A broker's daily work is load matching: receiving a shipment request, pricing it against current market rates, posting it to load boards and its own carrier network, checking the chosen carrier's operating authority, insurance and safety record, and dispatching it with a rate confirmation. During transit the broker tracks the load, updates the shipper, and resolves appointment changes, detention and lumper fees. After delivery it collects proof of delivery, bills the shipper, pays the carrier and manages any cargo claim.
Shippers use brokers on a spot basis, load by load, or under contract rates for recurring lanes. Larger brokers add managed transportation, taking over carrier procurement and freight planning across all of a shipper's lanes, often through a TMS portal with tracking and reporting. Some brokers also run warehousing, drayage or cross-border freight.
In the US, confirm the broker's FMCSA broker authority and its BMC-84 surety bond or BMC-85 trust, and in Canada its provincial registration where required. Ask for contingent cargo and auto liability coverage, and how it vets carriers for authority, insurance, safety scores and fraud, since double brokering and identity theft are real risks in this trade.
Ask which lanes and equipment the broker moves most, how many active carriers it has in your lanes, and whether you get a named account rep. Request its tracking process and on-time reporting. TIA membership signals adherence to an industry code of conduct. Warning signs include rates far below the market, reluctance to name the carrier, and no clear written claims procedure.
Shippers pay an all-in rate per load, which covers the carrier's line haul, fuel and the broker's margin; accessorial charges for detention, liftgates, extra stops or layovers are added when they occur. Rates move with the lane's capacity, equipment type, season, fuel prices, lead time and how attractive the freight is to carriers. Contract rates give stability, while spot rates follow the market.
