Changing the face of hockey
HDA - Hockey Diversity Alliance
THE CHALLENGE A history of discrimination – Hockey has a troubling aspect where players of color, including black, brown, and indigenous athletes, face racism, resulting in significant repercussions for the sport. Youth hockey league registrations are declining at a concerning rate. In a moment of racial awareness, nine NHL players of color united to highlight the pressing issues within the sport. Their goal was to help ensure that children of color develop and maintain a passion for hockey by fostering diversity and inclusivity. With crucial meetings scheduled with the NHL and Hockey Canada and only weeks before the NHL resumed activities in Covid bubbles, the Hockey Diversity Alliance enlisted ZGM to create a refined brand. This process was completed more swiftly than Connor McDavid on a breakaway. THE WORK Branding – Within a month, from the establishment of the Hockey Diversity Alliance to the kickoff of the 2020 season, ZGM created an engaging logo and brand identity for the HDA. On August 1, 2020, Matt Dumba became the first NHL player to kneel during a national anthem ceremony, wearing the HDA hoodie designed by ZGM. As he knelt, ZGM launched the HDA website, store, brand video, and social media accounts, alongside the #isupporthda campaign. Campaign – The highly effective #isupporthda organic campaign was initiated to garner support from allies. Players shared a video featuring HDA supporters (including Connor McDavid, Patrick Mahomes, Alexander Ovechkin, and others) publicly showing their backing for the HDA and the Black Lives Matter movement. The social media channels, created and managed by ZGM, accumulated over 27,000 followers. RESULTS Matt Dumba’s speech and subsequent actions during the anthem were witnessed by millions as the 2020 hockey season commenced. Significant financial commitments from Kraft-Heinz and Scotiabank were made to support grassroots initiatives, with more corporate sponsors to be revealed soon. Over $250,000 in HDA merchandise was sold, attracting 85,000 unique visitors to the website.
