**Virtual Signal Box: Realistic VR Training for Switch Failures**
**The Challenge:** The aim of this project was to develop a realistic, interactive VR training program that replicates the intricate process of managing railway switch failures. This involved creating digital twins of both the signal box and the switch that are not only visually accurate but also functionally complete. The VR training needed to allow trainees to go through the entire troubleshooting process without depending on actual signal box infrastructure. Additionally, the platform was designed to act as a basis for future training modules, making it a pivotal asset in the digitalization of technical education.
**Our Solution:** We initiated the project by simulating a real malfunction and taking numerous reference photos to construct authentic digital models of the switch and signal box. One of the main challenges was to not only visually recreate the signal box but also to accurately map its internal operations. By utilizing real-world data, we developed a detailed digital twin of the switch system within Unreal Engine, enabling us to simulate key interactions between the central control unit and field personnel in an immersive manner. Using the VRMacher toolset, we efficiently implemented the training process without the need for complex programming, allowing us to concentrate on the instructional design and effective communication of technical content. During the training, learners navigate the complete process—from identifying the problem at the control center and reporting it, to following communication protocols and resolving issues in the field. This simulation provides a safe, scalable, and resource-efficient alternative to hands-on training in a real signal box. Furthermore, this virtual platform is fully expandable and serves as a robust foundation for future modules, making it an effective tool for modern and scalable workforce training.
