Peter Tertzakian, a well-known energy expert and bestselling author, has an exceptional collection of energy-related artifacts and memorabilia. While working on Energyphile, his new initiative to delve into the history, current state, and future of energy, he sought a distinctive way to present his collection. Peter recognized that social media fosters connections between individuals, allowing them to share their experiences, while the Internet of Things links devices to exchange operational data. He wondered how objects themselves—such as art, photographs, museum items, and even concepts or narratives—could be interconnected. Most online "museums" he encountered were basic linear lists cataloging each item. Instead, Peter envisioned a more engaging interface that would narrate stories for each piece and reveal the thematic links among all items, ultimately weaving a larger narrative. He aimed to create a platform that would guide users through a serendipitous journey into the energy narrative. This vision led to PhileSpace, an Internet of Objects and Stories. To bring this idea to fruition, VizworX collaborated closely with the Energyphile team to develop PhileSpace, a visually engaging platform for showcasing Peter’s collection. PhileSpace taps into the human fascination with storytelling and invites exploration driven by users. The content is presented in a dynamic, integrated format that emphasizes the relationships between objects, while user interactions are designed to be intuitive, similar to rearranging cards on a tabletop. The platform features brief stories and vignettes—short “postcards” that highlight the collection's artifacts. These vignettes are arranged along two dimensions: forces of change and a timeline. Additionally, stories related to a vignette are accessible in the right sidebar, offering multiple ways for users to interact with the content.

Canada Energy Regulator - Data Visualization

OPPORTUNITY: Canada’s Energy Regulator (CER) is a government department responsible for overseeing pipelines, energy development, and trade throughout Canada, striving for a sustainable energy future. Their decisions take into account economic, environmental, and social factors that impact people's lives. In response to a government directive for increased transparency and accessibility for various stakeholders—including regulators, investors, pipeline operators, and the public—the CER sought innovative methods to structure and disseminate their data. An initial successful pilot project convinced them that a series of custom data visualizations would create an effective and user-friendly solution. SOLUTION: This project was a multi-year collaboration in which VizworX worked closely with various stakeholders, both from the client and other partners, to create a set of data visualization suites based on a large and complex dataset. Critical Collaboration: One of VizworX's key strengths is their ability to develop and implement collaboration strategies. For this initiative, they closely collaborated with the NEB and a team from iLab, a division of the University of Calgary's Department of Computer Science that focuses on human-computer interaction and data visualization. Together, these teams formed a cohesive unit that guided the project from strategy development to final execution. “We integrate collaboration into all our processes,” said Jeff LaFrenz, CEO of VizworX. “We employ agile methodology and adopt a highly iterative approach, continuously refining our work based on feedback and inputs from our partners.” Taming the Data: With all stakeholders aligned, the first step was to clean the original dataset, which contained 300,000 rows of CSV data. This task was assigned to the NEB team, who then transferred the data to the iLab team for visualization design.

Cenovus Energy AI

Issue: Cenovus Energy Inc., an integrated oil and natural gas firm aiming to develop its assets safely, innovatively, and efficiently, sought an advanced solution for safeguarding and monitoring its properties. At that time, they had a basic security system at their entrances, where employees needed to swipe cards to gain access to buildings. However, this setup was not ideal and still left room for security breaches. In search of a better solution, Cenovus reached out to VizworX to create a Face and Object Recognition Application to bolster entrance security while also reducing costs. Solution: VizworX suggested developing a real-time face recognition application for Windows, utilizing Microsoft Cognitive Services and integrating it with Exchange Server. The application would use a camera to detect human faces in its field of view, capturing images which would be sent to Microsoft’s Cognitive Services for processing. The system would then identify users or log information on new individuals. To achieve this, VizworX employed a machine learning model to recognize users' identities and analyze facial and object features. The facial analysis would provide insights such as age and emotion, as well as a general description. Once identified, users would be granted access to enter the offices. The application would also interact with external services based on the input from the identified users, which would primarily be via speech, enabling them to engage with the system and execute predefined tasks. This approach not only employs machine learning to facilitate access for authorized personnel but also aims to lower costs related to card replacements and the shortcomings of previous security measures.
