It’s true: when faced with tough situations and limited resources, South Africans are resourceful. Take today, for instance. You know those plastic kiddie pools shaped like clams? Ours is a vivid green. (You might wonder why we have a kiddie pool, regardless of its color.) I manage to lift it onto the picnic table. (Lifting feels like too strong a term for a lightweight, green kiddie pool. Maybe “flip” is better?) In any case, it’s now on the table. I have a stylish purple watering can (a muted antique purple, not a blinding royal shade). As I begin to fill the kiddie pool, I quickly realize the nozzle is meant for those with a lot of patience. So, I switch to using a bucket. After filling it with three buckets of cold tap water, one kettle of boiling water, one bottle of Head & Shoulders 2-in-1 shampoo, one toothbrush, and one dry cerise towel, I’m ready.
For the first Maltese, I start by soaking one wiggly dog. Getting only half of it wet is perfectly acceptable. I apply shampoo and wrestle with the slippery pup, softly muttering curses to avoid startling it. I need to trim some tangled fur with blunt scissors, but, whoops, no scissors in reach! I dash to the drawer with the squirming dog tucked under my arm while gripping the counter with my other hand, navigating the slippery tiles. IMPORTANT: Don’t wash the entire dog; you don’t want to be perceived as a dog person. Once done, I let the dog go—just keep in mind that the green clam pool is now at nose height for it (which, coincidentally, might have shrunk in size and is now unrecognizable).
Then, I repeat the process with the second dog. But if you find yourself heading for the scissor drawer again, it might be better to go to the fridge, fling the door open, and take a swig from the nearest bottle instead. (Little tip: if you’re a novice and can’t manage to open a bottle with one hand while holding a wet dog with the other on a slippery floor, use your sword to cut the bottle open at the neck.)
