Oppo - Naming a Global Smart Phone Brand

BBK Electronics

BBK, a prominent Chinese electronics firm, set out to launch a new global electronics brand. We created the OPPO brand name, which was ideal for a smartphone concept. The name is inspired by the word "opportunity" and represents a perfect balance, embodying core values such as harmony and equality. It is both unique and approachable. The brand needed to have a truly global presence, appealing to target audiences in various countries, with a registered worldwide trademark and an available .com URL. The interactive naming process took under four weeks, followed by another four weeks of legal and linguistic analysis. The entire project was carried out in close collaboration with the international design agency Studio Dumbar, which worked on the visual identity. The new brand was successfully launched in the Chinese market under its original name and quickly grew to become one of the top five smartphone brands globally, gaining universal recognition and admiration.

Klarna - Buy Now, Pay Later

Klarna

Klarna is the top provider of secure online payments in the Nordic region, with over 35 million users accessing its services through more than 6,000 online stores. Originally launched in Sweden, it has transformed into a genuinely international brand, boasting a market capitalization of USD $6.7 billion. The naming process was quite dynamic; intriguingly, Klarna wasn't initially among the preferred choices. In this industry, there is often a tendency to favor names that sound English. However, after several discussions, the team began to favor a Swedish term. The availability of a free domain name was a compelling factor for selecting Klarna, along with the positive meaning of “getting ready; light up,” which significantly influenced the final decision.

Rebranding Vistaprint to Cimpress

In 2014, Vistaprint N.V., a leader in mass customization, recognized the necessity to revamp its branding strategy to align with its ambitious growth targets. We contributed to the creation of this brand strategy and helped establish their new brand name: Cimpress. The process involved active participation from the entire board, concluding with a comprehensive branding strategy. This included the development of a new corporate identity that would stand apart from the increasing number of customer-facing brands across various segments and markets. Through two interactive naming workshops, the brand name Cimpress was created, reflecting the company's core operations (Computer Integrated Manufacturing and Printing) and the advantage it offers its customers: producing impressive products. The company is listed on NASDAQ (CMPR) and has achieved an average annual revenue exceeding 2 billion USD.
