PÖNG

**THE CHALLENGE** Ukpöng, a steelpan performer and cultural curator located in Montreal, reached out to us while feeling that he had hit a plateau in his career. He aimed to rejuvenate his personal brand and sought recognition for both himself and the instrument he plays, aspiring to challenge and redefine the perceptions associated with “Mr. Pong,” his previous pseudonym. **THE SOLUTION** The Six Cinquième team dedicated time to understand Ukpöng’s goals and future aspirations. We discovered that he wished to destigmatize the steelpan by raising awareness about its cultural significance and showcasing its musical versatility through his modern interpretation. Additionally, he aimed to be recognized not just as a steelpan musician but also as a connector and creator of experiences. To address these needs, we developed a versatile brand identity and a new website that aligned with his vision and helped him realize his full potential. Drawing inspiration from the unique spelling of his name, we introduced “Pöng” as an updated iteration of “Mr. Pong.” Our logo and icon design reflect the percussive sounds of the instrument emerging from the Ö. This focus on the Ö is deliberate; its shape and the trema above evoke the essence of the steelpan and its rhythmic sounds. We enhanced this by incorporating abstract shapes around the Ö’s negative space that subtly resonate with the instrument's tones. The new brand identity more accurately reflects Ukpöng’s personality and empowers him to embrace his full potential confidently.

The Centre for Canadiens of African Descent

Unknown

THE CHALLENGE The Centre for Canadians of African Descent (CCAD) is a revival of the former Negro Community Centre (NCC), which once served as a vital resource for Montreal’s Black community, welcoming notable figures like Nelson Mandela and Oscar Peterson. The NCC ceased its operations in the early 1990s and was ultimately demolished in 2014. CCAD aims to restore and uphold the legacy of the NCC by transforming it into a contemporary version of its former self. However, the organization struggled with the clarity and vision necessary to reestablish itself under the new name, as well as to regain confidence in the center following its previous difficulties within the community. THE SOLUTION Six Cinquième assisted the CCAD team in articulating and aligning the organization's vision for the future, along with creating a brand identity that would enable them to realize this new vision. The logo emphasizes the uniqueness and complexity of the Black Canadian experience, showcasing that Black Canadians come from varied backgrounds and possess rich cultural identities, while still being unified by their shared experiences of living as Black individuals in Canada. The design elements featured in the “C” and “A” celebrate and underscore the multifaceted nature of having both Canadian and African heritage, which serves to both unite and distinguish us. Additionally, the logo incorporates patterns reminiscent of modern interpretations of traditional African prints, bridging the past with the future. THE OUTCOME Following the launch of the new branding and the process of clarifying the organization's vision, CCAD was able to mobilize and positively impact the city's decision to acquire the historic site of the original NCC, which had been poised for redevelopment into condominiums by private developers. This achievement has instilled new hope for the future of the community center, and the CCAD continues its dedication to preserving the NCC's legacy.

Home + Space

Unknown

The Home+Space team primarily serves architects and interior designers, acting as a facilitator for communication between renovators and homeowners. They provide a range of high-quality kitchen and bathroom products as a resource and consultancy. When H+S reached out to us, they were already operating but lacked an identity and website to establish their presence and set themselves apart from well-known competitors in the field. We began by creating a sleek, sophisticated brand identity that combines luxury and artistry, distinguishing H+S from larger industry entities that typically have a more conventional appearance. The brand was designed to highlight its commitment to detail and creativity, giving them a unique competitive advantage. This aesthetic was carried through to the website design, which emphasized interactivity and storytelling while preserving the luxurious feel of the visual identity. The plus sign in their logo symbolizes both "Home" and "Space." A home signifies a stable foundation for comfort, represented by the line below the plus sign. In contrast, "space" conveys the idea of expansion and limitless potential. The plus sign also reflects the division of space in a home, viewed either from above like a floor plan or from a dollhouse perspective, illustrating the separation of different levels in a residence.
