JetGo 900 Design and Engineering

Aero Specialties

**Product Vision** AERO Specialties is a frontrunner in the Ground Support Equipment (GSE) sector, supplying products for airports and air bases across the globe. Their current range includes the JetGo ground power units, which feature a diesel hybrid model. With the introduction of new Tier 4 diesel emissions standards, it was necessary to redesign the diesel JetGo, giving it a fresh appearance and a new Tier 4 compliant drive system. GSE products are generally utilized and stored outdoors, and even though users possess significant skills and training, they often face time constraints and high pressure. As a result, the JetGo would endure considerable wear and tear, necessitating a robust design. **Final Outcome** SGW Designworks developed the JetGo 900 to ensure maximum durability, featuring a distinctive design that distinguishes it from competitors. The JetGo 900's design includes unique aesthetics, efficient thermal management, and the seamless integration of the diesel/electric power generation system along with its controls. The product was launched just 14 months after the project's initiation and was awarded the prestigious Good Design Award in 2019.

Biometric Firearm Development and Engineering

Lodestar

**Product Vision** The mechanical and electrical components of the firearm needed to be compact, easily manufacturable, reliable, and accessible. Its features were also designed to attract a diverse user base. From a technical standpoint, the mechanical and electrical elements—including a three-button pin pad, a fingerprint-reading biometric device, Bluetooth components, battery, and other supporting electronics—had to fit within the existing dimensions of the firearm’s frame. Furthermore, since this was the first firearm to incorporate a keypad, there was no established standard for button placement. From the outset, LodeStar Works aimed to target a wide audience for their biometric and keypad-activated weapon, necessitating that SGW Designworks address various usage scenarios during the prototype development phase. **Final Outcome** Within less than a year, SGW transformed an idea into a fully functional prototype: a smart gun incorporating reliable, innovative technology and designed to provide various user experiences. To gain insights into user interactions, SGW carried out both qualitative and quantitative research, which helped determine how users would engage with the firearm. This research informed improvements in specific features, like finding the optimal placement for the biometric pin pad, to cater to the majority of users. Multiple working prototype iterations included these findings.

5G Vehicle Router Development

Cradlepoint

Product Vision SGW needed to create a robust product that combined essential electronics and offered the right aesthetic to satisfy user requirements. This initiative involved user interface design, housing, and system integration. For the outdoor device's electronics integration, SGW had to consider enclosure and industrial design aspects while working closely with the client. Cradlepoint's initial design concept required adjustments to match the router's exterior appearance with the internal component arrangement. Its distinctive shape necessitated a custom PCB and efficient wire routing, alongside a weather-resistant door for SIM card access. Given their past collaborations on enclosure design and engineering, Cradlepoint felt confident in partnering with SGW for this project. Final Outcome In a matter of months, SGW Designworks successfully fused the modem, antennas, and router into a streamlined, durable casing. This new design simplified installation and reduced costs, incorporating a power cable or Power over Ethernet (PoE) instead of coax cables. The router features a rubber seal, ensuring a watertight barrier that safeguards internal components, even on vehicles with curved roofs. Cradlepoint launched the R2100 Series 5G Ruggedized Router within just a few months. This all-in-one package integrates a modem, antenna, and a Wi-Fi 6-capable router, which can function as a standalone 5G router or as an upgrade to an existing router. Cradlepoint's continuous innovation led to its recognition as the Innovative Company of the Year at the 2019 Idaho Innovation Awards.
