Located in Terminal 1's Domestic Departures at Toronto Pearson International Airport, the Air Canada Café provides a distinctive bistro-style lounge ideal for busy travelers seeking a quick snack or a comfortable place to relax. This project was completed on schedule and within budget, thanks to Royalty’s knowledge of airport protocols, security measures, and operational considerations. A significant challenge involved managing around 50 concrete core locations of various sizes that intersected with Pearson’s baggage handling routes. Ensuring operational efficiency and employee health and safety was crucial, and Royalty’s experience in this setting was vital for a smooth completion while reducing risks. The café boasts an impressive entrance featuring a custom powder-coated perforated metal screen wall with fiber optic lighting, flight-information monitors, and a customer service podium. Additional highlights include a marble low-wall with integrated banquette seating, cyber counters equipped with multiple USB charging ports, a printer work station, and a beautifully designed bar offering espresso, hot chocolate, and fresh juices. There is also a self-serve area with refrigerated grab-and-go options, allowing customers to pack items and head out to their flights. A striking full-height mural by Canadian artist Shawn Evans serves as a focal point in the main lounge area. Furthermore, design details such as terrazzo tile flooring, porcelain wall tiles, a full-height stainless steel kitchen, custom millwork, and chic restrooms contribute to the project's overall appeal.

The reception desk was constructed with a plywood frame and featured a seamless white solid surface on the front, while the back was finished with white plastic laminate. The 11-foot-long transaction area showcased a translucent white solid surface on the front, illuminated by dimmable LED light panels. The counter was completed with an opaque white solid surface material. Behind the reception desk, there was a 22-foot wood veneered feature wall and ceiling, made from fire-rated plywood with quarter-sawn white oak veneer and solid wood edges, secured with concealed fasteners. The wall had an inset niche designed for monitor screens and included hidden storage. Adjacent to the desk, an Information Kiosk Niche Wall created from solid surface, with a sliding shelf for computers, was installed for self-service registration. A backlit strip of solid surface within the wall served as a distinctive signage feature, with letters engraved halfway into the material and filled with an opaque substance. An access panel was skillfully hidden in the neighboring door frame. Additionally, another monitor on the reception desk was mounted on a solid surface stand to ensure ADA compliance for the registration area.

A striking 25-foot tall sculpture shaped like a flower, featuring four "petals," serves as a vibrant focal point in the information area of Terminal One. Each backlit solid surface petal is equipped with a 12-foot by 5-foot LCD screen displaying the latest travel updates. The sculpture is surrounded by a circular information desk that includes integrated monitors and has a top made of solid surface and solid wood, accented with stainless steel. A curved steel frame supports two cantilevered sections of the desk, which are covered with a double-curved solid surface. Additionally, a 12-foot high information pylon and six freestanding kiosks with LCD screens and finishes of solid surface and wood veneer are arranged around the sculpture. The project's second phase will add 18 more kiosks in two different sizes, six pylons, and three smaller information desks at various spots throughout the airport.
