Under the leadership of CEO Bruce Smith, a top-tier rowing coach, their aim was to merge technology with the feeling of real-water rowing, ensuring that every stroke feels genuine. Rocket Farm Studios built Hydrow’s mobile app from the ground up, prioritizing user-friendly design, real-time metrics, live streaming, and smooth hardware integration. Quick Key originated from a discussion between entrepreneur Isaac van Wesep and his teacher friend, Walter Duncan. Duncan has always supported the idea of frequently testing students' knowledge, even on a daily basis, but found the grading process to be increasingly challenging. He wondered if there was a way to avoid hand-grading or using expensive scanning machines, suggesting that it would be beneficial if his phone could quickly scan and grade answer sheets. As they continued to brainstorm, they both grew enthusiastic about the concept. They envisioned a tool that would be affordable for all educators, enabling regular assessments in both low-income and affluent schools. Their belief was that widespread use of this tool could help reduce the educational gap between wealthy and underprivileged students. “Much of the educational technology available is amazing but only accessible to the top 1 percent of students and teachers in well-funded institutions,” van Wesep noted. Consequently, they decided to pursue their idea. To realize their vision, they partnered with Rocket Farm Studios, selected for its swift and thorough response to their RFP, impressive creative portfolio, and effective discovery process, according to van Wesep. While they had a concept, they struggled to provide many specific guidelines for the developers. Rocket Farm's team assisted them in converting their idea into clear technical requirements and an easy-to-use user interface. Once the details were finalized, developers faced two significant challenges. The first was figuring out how to turn a smartphone camera into an optical scanner. Although capturing an image of a completed bubble sheet was straightforward, factors such as lighting, shadows, and the phone's positioning complicated the analysis of the photo, as explained by developer Seth Lipkin.
