The Global Foodbanking Network
Hunger is frequently more about logistics than food availability. In developing nations, around 15-30% of food is wasted, resulting in billions of pounds of discarded food each year, while one in four individuals suffers from malnutrition. Food banking systems utilize surplus food and distribute it to those in greatest need, involving various societal sectors—government, business, and civil society—in the initiative. These food banks obtain donated goods, much of which would otherwise go to waste, from farms, manufacturers, distributors, retailers, consumers, and other sources, and provide it to those in need through a network of community agencies. GFN collaborates with local leaders to establish food banking services in areas where they previously did not exist. Since 2006, GFN has helped launch food banking organizations in 15 countries, enabling access to food for those in need and empowering communities to assist those facing hunger and nutritional deficiencies.
