Delivering a change management programme for BD

BD is among the largest medical technology companies worldwide, creating cutting-edge technologies, services, and solutions that enhance clinical therapy for patients and improve clinical processes for healthcare providers. During the pandemic, BD experienced a significant surge in global demand, and the Pharma Systems Quality team was committed to ensuring that this growth did not compromise quality. They aimed to foster a culture and mindset focused on quality throughout the division. People Business was chosen as a partner to design, develop, and execute pilot phases, as well as to assist internal leadership in managing the full implementation. We established a change management program that began with forming a cross-functional steering group and engaging the global leadership team. This was succeeded by a benchmarking exercise using a tailored questionnaire, followed by a series of workshops and coaching for leaders, managers, and internal advocates. We articulated a compelling narrative that clearly communicated the initiative to all stakeholders and aimed to achieve measurable improvements in benchmarking survey perceptions within a 90-day timeframe. Two pilot phases were conducted to test the program in diverse contexts, including a manufacturing environment and within commercial and R&D teams, ensuring global representation in both. During these pilot phases, the business saw notable advancements in awareness and attention to quality, paving the way for a full rollout. We are now training internal ambassadors to lead the next phases, with our support taking on a collaborative role. We are thrilled to partner with the quality leadership team on this crucial initiative, which will shape how people in Pharma systems operate globally and highlight the importance of cultivating a quality culture within this segment of the organization.

Improving work-life balance for employees

University of Surrey

The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) at the University of Surrey has the largest enrollment, bringing in around 5,000 students each year. The pandemic led to increased workloads and difficulties; a staff survey conducted in 2021 indicated that 35% of faculty staff strongly felt they were unable to balance work and home life effectively. Consequently, the HR Business Partner for FASS sought guidance from People Business to help the Dean and senior leadership take time to reflect on their roles in relation to work-life balance. How People Business Supported the Client During the exploratory phase, members of the senior leadership team, including the Dean, Heads of School and Department, Associate Deans, and senior professional services staff, were interviewed with questions focused on work-life balance. The insights gained from these interviews informed the program’s development, allowing People Business to create a tailored response for FASS. We quickly discovered that the leadership team already worked well together, exhibiting strong teamwork and collaboration. Therefore, the program aimed to engage them in leading initiatives to enhance work-life balance. Using a blended learning approach, we designed pre-work assignments to encourage participants to engage with topics prior to each module. Each module was intended to facilitate discussions on how these concepts could positively affect work-life balance and provide an opportunity for participants to create actionable plans that could be implemented immediately. The program was completed over six weeks, consisting of three three-hour in-person modules. The team expressed a desire for practical tools to support their staff, so People Business developed a toolkit comprising a variety of relevant resources and activities aimed at improving employees' work-life balance within the Faculty.
