Faster ramp rate studies for National Grid
National Grid Gas Transmission Asset Management oversees the design, policy, and implementation of projects for the UK high-pressure pipeline (National Transmission System or NTS). If a new connection to the network results in a gas pressure increase that is either too rapid or too slow for the system to handle, it could negatively impact compressors, existing connections, and overall network safety and security. Consequently, when a National Grid customer requests a new network connection, a 'ramp rate study' may be conducted to assess whether the NTS can appropriately manage the proposed rate. Previously, National Grid took around three months to complete these studies internally, involving 1-3 analysts. Due to the labor-intensive nature of the process, only five studies could be requested per year, necessitating the outsourcing of some work. After evaluating the current systems and processes, OCC and National Grid developed a central datastore for ramp rate studies and implemented a desktop application that simplifies the definition of complex scenarios involving multiple off-take/on-take nodes. This application also connects with the systems utilized to execute scenarios, track progress, and communicate with stakeholders. In addition to streamlining scenario creation, the project automated and standardized the necessary steps for conducting a study. This improvement has enabled the department to handle 100% of ramp rate studies in-house, enhancing overall productivity and eliminating the need for costly external consultants, ultimately resulting in better service for National Grid customers.
