The Oregonian

ISSUE Let's address the significant concern. The year 2020 was difficult for everyone, particularly for Portland, Oregon. That summer, Portland frequently made national headlines due to civil unrest and protests following George Floyd's murder. The Oregonian prides itself on transparency and authentic storytelling, making it one of the news outlets that informed the public during this time. By the end of 2020, Portland’s image had deteriorated significantly, prompting The Oregonian to confront the question: "What’s the next step?" SOLUTION Central to The Oregonian’s mission is the goal of “strengthening and empowering the communities they serve.” This presented them with a unique opportunity to embrace that mission and establish a sub-brand focused on presenting an alternative narrative—one that remains truthful to the events of 2020 while highlighting what makes Oregon remarkable. After all, people from across the country continue to relocate to the state. This new narrative will share the stories of individuals, experiences, and locations that make Oregon a desirable place to live.

Rose City 5K Run

Nike

CHALLENGE As the reopening of Portland approached, the Portland Chamber of Commerce collaborated with Nike to organize the city's first 5k run since the 2020 lockdown to generate excitement and motivation among residents. The first priority was to convey the enforcement of COVID-19 restrictions for the event. Additionally, it was essential to represent the city's diverse cultures in our visuals and messaging. As a minority-led studio, we are committed to producing inclusive marketing content that reflects everyone. Lastly, we had a tight deadline of just one week to complete the project, so our team stepped up to the challenge. SOLUTION We aimed to develop a marketing campaign that radiated optimism, ensured safety, and promoted inclusivity. The best approach was to incorporate playful illustrations combined with warm colors. We began our illustration process with low-fidelity sketches, allowing for quick feedback. We focused on creating straightforward illustrations that effectively communicated the values of health, safety, and diversity that the client wanted to emphasize.

Lyft

CHALLENGE Lyft and other rideshare services are under scrutiny regarding issues such as driver classification and safety during the COVID-19 pandemic, amidst outdated legislation. The discussion surrounding the pros and cons of the gig economy has overshadowed Lyft’s positive contributions to climate change, voting access, and public health. Their innovative solutions have not received the recognition they deserve. In response, Swell, a creative agency based in Los Angeles, collaborated with us to create, animate, and produce a campaign aimed at presenting Lyft as a community ally to policymakers. STRATEGY Let's face it, lawmakers often overlook the positive initiatives and advantages of leading brands in the gig economy. So, how do you effectively communicate with them without coming across as overly corporate? You allow the market to convey its own message. Lyft needed to shift the narrative to influence perceptions and emphasize the advantages of using their services—from their viewpoint and that of the community. A strategy emerged: by launching a targeted public campaign in California, Massachusetts, New York, Colorado, and Washington, D.C., we could showcase and underscore the community benefits provided by companies like Lyft.
