Developing of a brand new e-book reader in Flutter

Jan Melvil Publishing

We oversee the development of the Jan Melvil Publishing mobile app, which is created using Flutter, beginning with the design of a new e-book reader. Jan Melvil Publishing is a renowned Czech publishing house known for releasing global bestsellers in personal development and education, and it was one of the pioneers in introducing e-books to the Czech market. When they opted to enhance their portfolio with an interactive e-book reader, we were assigned to ensure its successful integration into the existing Melvil application. The original Melvil app, also developed in Flutter, was mainly used for listening to audiobooks. When we were asked to incorporate an e-book reader, we had to decide between continuing with Flutter or switching to native development to leverage existing native libraries. After conducting comprehensive research on both options, we chose to stick with Flutter. This framework enables us to maintain a single codebase across all platforms while keeping complete control over the code, offering great flexibility for future enhancements. The e-book reader employs the Flutter WebView plugin to display individual book pages, which are rendered using JavaScript. Page swiping and control elements are managed within Flutter. We designed the e-book reader for speed and ease of use, allowing users to effortlessly navigate chapters, search within the text, highlight preferred sections, and make personal notes. We emphasized a user-friendly experience for tablet users, achieved through a smart implementation in Flutter. We continue to actively enhance the application and plan to introduce many new features. With the launch of this e-book reader, Melvil Publishing solidifies its leading role in the personal development and education market.

Transforming school admin system into a modern app

The Bakaláři school administration system is the most widely used in the Czech Republic, with a large number of teachers, principals, and students relying on it every day. When the developers decided to convert the original desktop application into a modern web and mobile version, they faced challenges typical of such transformations. At NetGlade, we took on this challenge through thorough planning, innovation, and system development. Our primary focus has been on rewriting applications built on older technologies like Delphi or Visual FoxPro to align with contemporary industry standards, which is no small feat. This project has given us insights into the system's inner workings, prompting us to assess the value, logic, and functionality of each app individually. Through comprehensive analyses, we aim to create solutions that fulfill three essential criteria: the app must be more user-friendly, quicker, and more intuitive while ensuring precise functionality and compatibility with the broader system. Whenever our developers face challenges, we quickly address them with our client. Our previous experiences and enthusiasm for technology allow us to provide advanced solutions that cater to both basic and more sophisticated users. For example, during the redesign of the school incident reporting app, we incorporated tools like Vue.js, Whimsical, and Figma for prototyping. Other Bakaláři applications are operating on Microsoft Azure’s serverless services. In 2021, our collaboration with Bakaláři deepened as we were entrusted with developing a completely new mobile app for Digiškolka. This app consolidates all communications between preschool teachers and parents into one platform. However, our work doesn’t stop there; our development team continually adds new teaching modules and updates to the web version.

A Flutter-based mobile app for teachers and pupils

Škola Online is a Flutter-based mobile application designed to simplify the management of school agendas for both teachers and students. This school information system allows principals, teachers, students, and parents to access daily educational activities through both web and mobile platforms. When the existing mobile app began to show its age, we were tasked with creating a new version using the popular Flutter framework. Škola Online provides users with control over school activities and responsibilities, enabling teachers to manage grades, attendance, and curriculum changes, while students and parents can view grades, timetables, and exam deadlines. The app is designed to be user-friendly for both adults and children, ensuring a pleasant experience regardless of who is using it. To meet this objective, we incorporated several key features and a complete visual redesign. The app is now developed on the latest version of Flutter, featuring improved controls that are faster, more responsive, and user-friendly without sacrificing simplicity. We considered both beginner and advanced users during the design process. Push notifications are managed through Firebase, primarily used by teachers to disseminate important information such as test dates and homework assignments. This software development kit (SDK) also helps us gather analytics to identify areas for improvement in future updates. Additionally, with Firebase Crashlytics, we can monitor errors in real-time and address issues more quickly than before. The new Škola Online app effectively bridges the most significant gaps of the original version, providing effortless access to curricular tasks for teachers and students, in line with modern information systems. This project stands as one of our proudest accomplishments at NetGlade, highlighting our ongoing partnership with Bakaláři, the leading school administration system in the Czech Republic.
