Our objective was to identify breast cancer using screening mammograms collected during routine check-ups. In machine learning terms, this involved binary classification with significantly imbalanced classes. The training dataset comprised over 53,000 negative cases and 1,158 positive cases (indicating cancer). The challenge for machine learning arose right from the beginning due to the limited number of positive samples. During the initial phase of the project, our team struggled to develop a satisfactory model despite numerous tests. However, we achieved reasonably good results after implementing an effective training pipeline that addressed class imbalance, scaling, model selection, and post-processing. The final decision-making process involved a voting strategy followed by calculating the average score from the votes. The solution was structured around four clear steps: converting DICOM files to PNG format, inferring three posterior models through test-time augmentation (TTA), averaging the ensemble probabilities or voting, and applying a threshold.
