Digital Transformation in a Global Biotech Firm
Roche, the largest biotech company globally, aimed to speed up its digital transformation to enable its network of laboratory partners to succeed in a software-driven economy. Moves The Needle collaborated with leadership and specialized teams to implement Lean Innovation, resulting in the development of a Lab Integrator Platform based on market-driven evidence, allowing for swift strategy execution and a groundbreaking industry solution. Our work included transformation consulting, expert training, and Lean Innovation coaching through a seven-team cross-business structure that identified and incorporated customer needs to create a real-time data and insights platform. Global teams from various areas such as data management, customer engagement, deployment, and commercialization carried out customer empathy interviews and experiments to validate hundreds of assumptions, generate market evidence for a feasible solution, and identify technologies for platform architecture, securing necessary resources to advance—all within just 90 days. Additional achievements included establishing an end-to-end digital platform framework, defining components for a cohesive view of customer environments and data, creating data governance standards, and outlining a roadmap for delivering a transformative industry solution. Leadership developed new skills for fostering a learning-oriented approach among teams. We enhanced cross-functional team capabilities by enabling critical interdependencies for parallel work, effective communication, and shared learning across multiple time zones. This initiative underscored the importance of customer-driven innovation and evidence-based decision-making for organizational transformation, fostering expertise in agile methodologies, rapid testing, and building customer empathy.
