OUR STORY
**BACKGROUND** Introduce your business and your role. The New York Post is a media organization that publishes a newspaper and runs various websites and apps, alongside other digital offerings. I serve as the Chief Digital Officer (CDO) of the company.
**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE** What issue were you aiming to solve with Fuzz? We had several low-quality apps that required a complete overhaul and redevelopment.
**SOLUTION** What was the extent of Fuzz's involvement? Fuzz developed applications for iPad and iPhone, as well as for Android devices. The iOS and Android tablet apps are paid products that replicate the print experience, allowing users to view the daily newspaper and flip through its pages. The phone app operates more like a standard news app that continuously updates based on our content management system (CMS), offering a different, free user experience compared to the tablet version. Fuzz also created a CMS that processes the newspaper, which includes adding new media and links, rearranging pages, and incorporating digital-only ads. Each overnight edition is automatically sent to our subscribers. If push notifications are enabled, the content downloads in the background so that it is ready when users wake up. A technical challenge we faced involved delivering tablet content due to file size constraints; thus, we worked on minimizing these files to conserve storage. Additionally, we sought to create an effective process for overnight content delivery. Our discerning readers have high expectations, which reflects our own company's standards. There were numerous ideas on how to proceed, leading us to navigate a lot of diplomacy and politics. Fuzz was also responsible for developing the subscription and authentication components, complicating matters beyond a simple free app setup. The technologies utilized in our software development included C++ and Swift.
**How did you end up collaborating with Fuzz?** While we engage another design agency for our WordPress needs, their founder had previously worked with Fuzz and praised their team. This recommendation came from someone who had long been involved with our web development. It was encouraging to see both web and app developers collaborate effectively. A significant factor for us was Fuzz's relevant experience within our sector, as they had developed apps for other publishers. Additionally, being a local company based in Brooklyn facilitated face-to-face meetings. The team was knowledgeable, shared great ideas in our initial discussions, and integrated well with us.
**What is your investment with Fuzz?** Our investment in Fuzz's services has exceeded $100,000 annually, amounting to over $500,000 since we began our partnership.
**What is the current status of this relationship?** We initiated our collaboration with Fuzz three years ago, and we continue to work together for ongoing support.
**RESULTS & FEEDBACK** Can you provide evidence of the engagement’s productivity, quality of work, or impact? Over the past two years, our phone apps have experienced notable growth in both active users and engagement time. In the last year alone, we saw a 20% rise in active users, which led to increased advertising revenue. The apps are user-friendly and fast, with people spending 30 to 40 minutes daily reading multiple stories, a testament to the high quality of the applications.
**How did Fuzz handle project management?** Fuzz has a well-organized and capable team, making collaboration smooth. Our project managers utilized JIRA, enabling us to track progress. During development, we conducted bi-weekly calls with Fuzz's team to establish timelines and resolve any emerging issues. Although we had a preliminary roadmap, it was adjusted as challenges arose.
**What impressed you most about Fuzz?** Fuzz excelled in every aspect, from technical prowess to project management. They communicated effectively, delivered quality work, and consistently supported the apps, always available to assist with any problems, even at odd hours.
**Are there areas for improvement for Fuzz?** As with all development work, costs can always be reduced, but we recognize that quality work comes at a price and requires time for proper execution. Fuzz's pricing is competitive compared to other agencies for similar services. While offshore options could be more economical, they would compromise the quality of the product.
