Wheel of Fortune

Business challenge: Expanding fan engagement with limited resources For more than 40 years, participants on Wheel of Fortune have spun the wheel for big wins on television. Today, viewers can join the fun by entering online sweepstakes for a chance to win prizes. However, WheelOfFortune.com was constrained by outdated technology. When major sweepstakes were introduced, enthusiastic fans would flood the website, overwhelming its servers. The Wheel of Fortune web operations relied on antiquated physical IBM servers that couldn't accommodate spikes in traffic. Moreover, the infrastructure, developed piecemeal over the years, proved to be unreliable. The legacy system struggled to keep up, resulting in regular crashes and outages. Technological solution: Cloud computing enhances flexibility and performance Transitioning the site's servers to the cloud provided the necessary scalability for Wheel of Fortune. By utilizing an Amazon Web Services (AWS) solution, the site can now ramp up capacity to effectively manage traffic surges. Additionally, Metal Toad implemented various strategies to enhance the site’s performance. Outcome: Continuous engagement and excitement The Wheel of Fortune website can now match the enthusiasm of fans. Whenever a new sweepstakes is launched, proactive scaling enables the team to double, triple, or even quadruple their capacity to accommodate the expected traffic, ensuring the site operates smoothly at all times.

Sony Crackle

### Business Challenge: An Outdated Legacy System In the competitive world of over-the-top (OTT) streaming entertainment, Sony Crackle was successfully delivering popular content in the US, Canada, and Latin America, but they were eager to broaden their audience. To achieve this, they required an infrastructure capable of scaling with their business growth. Given that OTT media streams content directly over the internet, the potential for expansion should be limitless. However, Sony Crackle's legacy platform—developed over many years in a patchwork manner—restricted their ability to enter new markets. Maintaining the outdated code was cumbersome, with database syncing taking two days. Additionally, expanding the infrastructure was a slow process, requiring significant lead times to accommodate new regions. ### Technological Solution: Automation for Swift Growth Metal Toad created a new platform based on the principle of infrastructure as code (IaC), which automates and replaces many traditional manual tasks with programmed processes. This innovation allows the team to launch a new region with just a few simple steps—enabling the infrastructure to automatically establish a new region in a matter of hours. By creatively integrating various advanced Microsoft Azure features, and overcoming the lack of existing documentation on these systems' interactions, Metal Toad pioneered a new method for streaming technology. ### Result: Accelerated, Reliable Growth Potential With 21 countries across seven streaming regions—and many more planned—Sony Crackle is now equipped for swift global expansion. Processes that previously took days or weeks can now be completed in just hours. The app's reliability has significantly improved; whereas addressing issues in the old system was time-consuming, the team can now quickly identify and resolve problems in real time.

Technology solution: Exceptional scalability Metal Toad created a cloud platform with remarkable elasticity. During the 48 hours surrounding Award Night 2015, GoldenGlobes.com handled over four million page requests with load times under a quarter of a second—achieving 100% uptime. The autoscaling infrastructure also reduces costs. The HFPA no longer has to invest in server space that is unnecessary for most of the year; instead, they can adjust their resources in real-time to accommodate traffic demands, minimizing waste while enhancing reliability. Additionally, Metal Toad developed a personalized content management system (CMS) to maintain user engagement even after the awards season ended. This scalable, adaptable, open-source CMS turned the HFPA’s online presence into a vibrant resource for entertainment content throughout the year. Impact: Significant savings, improved experience The HFPA’s website has evolved from a basic informational platform that saw occasional traffic spikes to a comprehensive resource for film and television industry content.
