The solution required a well-structured strategy that could raise awareness while guiding users toward making donations on the COVID-19 Relief landing page. A key challenge was identifying which users were inclined to donate and finding the most cost-efficient methods to reach them, all while achieving a positive return on investment amid competition from other charities with similar appeals. To tackle this, we adopted a dual strategy that combined Paid Social and Paid Search to generate conversions while leveraging Google Display Network (GDN) for broader awareness among target audiences. With limited resources, we utilized a main video and static images for promotion across Facebook and Instagram feeds, ensuring thematic consistency by using the same creative on GDN. We identified four primary target audiences: General Charity Donors, Children’s Charity Donors, High Net Worth Individuals, and Lookalikes (1-2%). Additionally, Starlight benefited from Google's Grants Charity program, allowing us to run all brand activities effectively, as user intent was strong and not affected by grants account restrictions. Simultaneously, we executed Generic and GDN activities from a standard Google Ads account to enhance competitiveness and increase clicks and donations. The results were outstanding: we achieved a cost per acquisition (CPA) that was 31% under our target, with a return on investment of 2.9, generating 6 million impressions and 25,000 clicks. In just four weeks, the campaign generated 51% more revenue from digital cash donations than had been projected for the entire year. Our collaborative approach and rigorous testing methodology resulted in exceptional performance, laying the groundwork for future fundraising efforts with Starlight. Notable influencers shared the campaign on their social media profiles following our outreach efforts. Additionally, Run Right gained significant visibility on one of the top Arsenal blogs, Le Grove, which attracts over 700,000 visitors monthly. Since its launch, the campaign has been embraced by numerous online running communities, leading to reposts of the Run Right creative and many user-generated content posts featuring the #RunRight hashtag, generating excitement and raising awareness for the initiative during the pandemic. As of now, the UK Government has not had to follow other major European countries in banning outdoor exercise, and we remain hopeful that our encouragement will help keep most parks open, allowing the UK population to continue enjoying exercise responsibly.
