Machine Learning Windmill Inspection with Autonomous Drones

In this project, we utilize drones to assess power generation wind turbines. Our team develops the software that operates the drones, collects data from them, and transfers that data to Microsoft Azure, where we utilize large GPU instances to analyze the images using a machine learning model that detects blade defects. The results are then automatically integrated into a graphical interface for the client, displaying information such as the severity of the damage, the specific blade affected, and other relevant details to facilitate repair scheduling.

**The Challenge** After years of reliance on an outdated analytics tool that lacked ongoing support, our client needed to find an alternative that would enable their business users to analyze and assess Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and generate reports related to organizational activities and data. The previous application contained around 20 business “views” that needed to be transferred to the new tool. As their business evolved, it was critical to have the capability to incorporate new data and views, highlighting the importance of flexibility and adaptability in the new solution. **The Solution** We collaborated with our client to explore various options and ultimately decided to implement Pentaho as the new solution. Our responsibilities included installing and customizing the Pentaho application to align with their business requirements. This involved configuring the tool to connect to Microsoft Active Directory for user authentication and developing custom Java plugins for Pentaho to allow for row-level filtering of data access. We designed and constructed a data warehouse and created numerous ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes to organize and transfer data from their operational database into the data warehouse. We also established an ETL framework that shared libraries with the operations database to reduce development time and minimize errors that could arise from discrepancies between the ETL and operational data models. Most of the ETL pipeline and data cube configurations underwent automated testing, which helped us detect issues early in the development process and ensured the accuracy of the data provided to users. As we transitioned each data view from the legacy tool to Pentaho, we worked closely with our client to confirm that the data being delivered was both relevant and precise. This focus on the real and current needs of our client significantly improved their BI landscape. Today, our client relies on Pentaho for most of their business intelligence requirements and we have established nearly 50 different data cubes for their use, encompassing a diverse range of domains within the organization, including Operations, Finance, and Human Resources.

Merchant Application Portal and Notifications

**The Challenge** A major player in banking and payment technologies, ranked among Fortune 500 companies, sought to streamline the onboarding process for new merchant accounts. Enhancements were necessary for both their internal operations and the sales teams, both internal and external, who were responsible for submitting applications. After developing a platform to manage residuals for this client, they requested our collaboration to add a portal to that platform. A unique aspect of this project was that the data for the new system would ultimately be sourced from a different application workflow system being created by another vendor. Unfortunately, that system would not be completed for 3-6 months, and our client required immediate updates on merchant applications. Consequently, the project was divided into two main phases: sales agents and teams needed to receive updates via email or SMS and control the frequency of these notifications. **The Solution** Despite starting with a relatively limited project specification, we adhered to our standard procedure of delivering a minimum viable product (MVP) as quickly as possible. This approach allowed us to implement the key features of the portal system within weeks. Upon completion, the operations team could log into the portal to add and edit merchant applications, facilitating the onboarding process. The system was designed to ensure that users received notifications relevant to them or their sales teams, with only the ops team having the capability to modify application records; all other users had read-only access. An audit trail was created to visualize the progress of merchant applications through the process. Sales teams and agents had the option to receive instant email notifications or a daily summary. They could also opt for SMS alerts for specific events. Each user could personalize their notification settings, and the system was adapted to account for time zones, displaying portal information and notifications in the user's local time. We collaborated with the other vendor to specify and integrate the API for the application workflow system into the portal.
