Modern Drupal Platform for Creative Community

New England Foundation for the Arts (NEFA)

Enhancing New England's creative economy through the strategic advancement of digital platforms. We transformed a simple directory into a vibrant digital ecosystem that links over 30,000 artists and organizations. When NEFA approached Last Call Media in 2017, their CreativeGround platform had outgrown its Drupal 7 framework. They were facing issues like hosting problems, performance slowdowns, and limited integration capabilities, which frustrated both staff and the creative community. What began as a response to urgent platform issues developed into an 8+ year strategic collaboration, resulting in a platform that now connects more than 30,000 artists, organizations, and creative businesses across six states in New England. Our solution involved migrating CreativeGround to a decoupled Drupal backend paired with a Next.js 14 frontend, providing NEFA with a scalable foundation. This partnership exemplifies the potential that arises when technical expertise aligns with mission-driven goals—creating a digital infrastructure that adapts to the needs of a thriving creative economy. Instant Brands is a well-known name in the United States, offering a variety of kitchen appliances designed to make home cooking more efficient, quicker, and healthier. Last Call Media collaborated with their team to create a more personalized user experience by showcasing the products in an aspirational manner rather than simply providing information. The aim was to foster a sense of community among home cooks, encouraging them to share their experiences with Instant Brand products. Due to the tight deadline for the redesign, intended to launch before the Black Friday holiday rush, we needed to conduct research efficiently to gather valuable insights quickly. On the first day, we organized card sorting and interactive activities with stakeholders to gain a deeper understanding of their business goals and assumptions. During the first week, we performed an in-depth competitor analysis. To better grasp the needs and motivations of home cooks, we consulted usability studies from UX research organizations (Baymard, NNG) and then tested our assumptions through a series of user tests on their current website using proto-personas based on their customer personas. Our primary objectives for the testing were to identify significant usability issues on the current site, understand how various personas choose products, and assess the accessibility of the existing Instant Brands Community section. These tests uncovered numerous areas for improvement, which we integrated into our initial design iterations through rapid wireframing, information architecture mapping, and prototyping throughout the design phase leading up to the launch.

Last Call Media teamed up with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to enhance its online engagement and service delivery to constituents through Mass.gov. This platform is managed by over 600 content creators from more than 400 government agencies. With 6.8 million residents utilizing the site, it sees approximately 15 million page views each month. The authors have utilized Mass.gov to boost constituent satisfaction and simplify access to the services offered. Last Call Media takes pride in achieving this success in our home state.
