How we built 100+ Drupal-powered microsites

Nestlé

Nestlé, the largest food and beverage company globally, owns numerous brands and sub-brands, along with thousands of products. Many of these products compete with each other, and virtually all Nestlé brands are available in various markets worldwide. Each brand, most sub-brands, and many products have dedicated microsites. An increasing number of them are also creating mobile apps, which serve either as mobile-native alternatives to existing web apps or as unique extensions offering different functionalities, such as games or specialized content. These microsites and applications must be tailored for multiple international markets, requiring adaptations for different languages, products, promotions, and local distribution partners, applicable to over 50 markets. While each brand operates largely independently, it also remains part of its broader division and the overall corporation. This brand-level independence exists within a corporate framework that includes mandatory compliance with technical and security standards for all digital assets. One such standard is that the backend of all microsites is powered by Drupal, an open-source content management system. A small but efficient team of 15 in the Knowledge & Communications department has successfully developed more than 100 Drupal-based web and mobile applications for three major Nestlé brands: Baby&Me, Wyeth, and The Nestlé Nutrition Institute (NNI).

KNect365 (Informa Connect)

The client sought to bring together all KNect365 events into one marketplace. The project's objective was to establish a comprehensive e-commerce platform for all KNect365 events and marketing activities. K&C handled the entire development process, which included product definition, UI/UX design, architecture, development, and DevOps.

Remote Team Extension with Full Stack Engineers

Burda

Enhancing an existing internal IT or software development team with nearshore software developers to handle increased workloads can present significant challenges. These include adapting standard procedures, such as stand-up meetings, when some developers are located 1000 km away from the rest of the team. It also raises questions about how to ensure remote specialists grasp the product owners' requirements without face-to-face interaction. Our objective was to establish a stable in-house team and integrate it with the client’s current team. A major hurdle was locating highly adaptable full-stack engineers capable of working on both the backend and frontend in rapidly changing environments. The client's internal development team was occupied with long-term projects, while management needed to concentrate on launching new initiatives. By seamlessly incorporating developers into the client's existing team through comprehensive onboarding on advanced technologies and architectural choices, Burda has achieved a stable workforce that doesn't require the reassignment of in-house developers between projects. In many of our collaborations, the distinction between external and internal staff becomes indistinct, allowing K&C and Burda engineers to work together as equals. Consequently, there was no longer any need for inefficient reallocation of in-house resources, enabling the client’s senior personnel to focus on new projects.
