Reference Collection

Tech Teams

We always advise our partners to gather references on a candidate before extending an offer. Here are two examples that illustrate the significance of this evaluation step. **Case #1:** A Senior Python Developer successfully completed all interview stages and was close to receiving an offer. However, when we contacted a colleague from his previous job, we learned that while he was highly skilled, there were instances where he could go missing for a week without any communication. Consequently, we decided not to move forward with this candidate, despite his strong performance during the evaluation. **Case #2:** A Senior Unity Developer with impressive and relevant experience appeared to be an ideal fit. We sought feedback from his two most recent positions, which yielded mixed reviews. One reference praised him as an excellent professional and urged us to hire him immediately, while the other strongly advised against it. To clarify the situation, we relayed this discrepancy to the candidate and sought his input. He explained that there had been a conflict with his manager, which the second reference had pointed out. After discussing the details of this conflict and addressing questions from the hiring manager, the offer was ultimately approved and accepted. These examples demonstrate that while gathering references is important, it is not a foolproof evaluation method. References can help prevent potential issues in the future but should be interpreted thoughtfully.

Lead Game Designer

Mobile Game Development

Task: A young mobile game development company is in search of an experienced Lead Game Designer. Since this position is crucial for the firm, the ideal candidate must be adept at managing strategies and metrics, as well as being responsible for the majority of the project. Problem: Professionals at this level have numerous job offers and a wide array of options. Joining a young gaming company poses a higher risk for candidates, as it's uncertain whether the startup will succeed. The market for Lead Game Designers is extremely competitive. Solution: The requirements were quite challenging. We opted to create a tailored hiring strategy and implement adjustments to make the process more manageable. Our options included: ✦ Reducing candidate requirements ✦ Increasing the salary by 20-30% to offer higher than the market average ✦ Hiring someone on a part-time basis The client did not find the first two options suitable, so we proceeded with the third. The strategy was to identify an exceptional candidate, illustrate the potential for growth, build their enthusiasm for the company, and eventually transition them to a full-time role. Result: Within three weeks, we identified several candidates. Two progressed through all interview stages, and one accepted the part-time offer. After working part-time for a month, this candidate chose to shift to a full-time position with the client. They've been successful together for a year. Why did it work? ✦ The candidate was provided with flexible conditions, allowing them to grasp the company’s dynamics without the pressure of strict deadlines. ✦ A gradual integration into the company fostered trust and minimized the risk associated with changing jobs. ✦ The client relied on our recruiting team’s expertise and adhered to the strategy we established. At Key People, we excel in filling challenging job vacancies.
