Building a Robust HR Department
Background: After transforming their home health company from a family-owned business into a rapidly growing enterprise with 200 employees and 300 clinicians in just a few years (earning Inc. 5000 recognition in 2018 and 2019), CEO Sofia and COO Alex Koshevatsky found themselves overwhelmed in their operations. Their Human Resources department was particularly under-resourced, staffed only by an HR Coordinator and a Recruiter with a combined two years of experience. They sought assistance from HR, Talent & Systems Consulting to create an exceptional employee experience and employer brand, develop an effective talent management strategy to reduce turnover, and provide leadership and management coaching. Sofia and Alex were frustrated by subpar employee performance and motivation, a lack of a compelling brand narrative, insufficient time and support for strategic planning, high employee turnover, and the absence of a cohesive strategy and systems to sustain their rapid growth. Additionally, their Employee Handbook failed to accurately reflect their company culture and processes, and the onboarding process was disorganized and inadequate, particularly for new executive hires.
Actions Taken: We developed a strategy to optimize their schedules and management practices, enhancing their time management by helping them automate, outsource, and delegate effectively to staff and virtual assistants. We established systems to improve internal communication, project management, and productivity, allowing them to reclaim essential time for strategic planning, brainstorming sessions aimed at enhancing client service and branding, providing constructive feedback to employees, and improving their leadership mindset and decision-making skills through executive coaching. At the same time, we completely redesigned their Employee Handbook to clearly outline all benefits, work policies, and compliance measures. We also revamped the onboarding process for executives, incorporating executive coaching and an accelerated program to ensure they ramped up effectively within 100 days.
