Refreshing an Iconic Brand: C-SPAN

No other organization is as frequently and affectionately parodied as C-SPAN. It's akin to a prim aunt whom everyone adores precisely for her straight-laced nature. While you wouldn't want to change her, you'd love the opportunity to go through her wardrobe and "retire" a few outfits. We were excited when this enduring figure in American media asked us to refresh their appearance as they neared their 40th anniversary. The challenge was to maintain the core essence that makes C-SPAN so iconic. After reviewing their existing research, we conducted interviews with stakeholders from Congress, the media, and C-SPAN’s supporters. We discovered a unanimous sentiment that C-SPAN is more relevant today than ever, along with a wish for them to promote themselves more actively. Beyond being just a single channel for covering the House, C-SPAN also features C-SPAN2 and C-SPAN3, original programming like BookTV and American HistoryTV, a C-SPAN Radio mobile app, and an impressive archive of nearly a quarter-million hours of broadcast video that is searchable and editable. The new visual identity needed to be cohesive across this entire spectrum—on-air, online, and in print. The most prominent aspect of the refresh—designing a new logo—might seem straightforward. However, the art and discipline of balancing letterforms and colors were carefully integrated into a broader assessment of their positioning for the 40th anniversary and beyond.

Intelsat: "Imagine Here"

In 1965, Intelsat introduced the first commercial global satellite communications system, facilitating the transmission of some of history's most significant events for people worldwide to experience. Despite having numerous stories to share and numerous milestones to highlight, Intelsat’s recognition has diminished due to the rise of new technologies that shifted focus away from satellite systems. To reclaim its leadership status, Intelsat engaged Grafik to lay the groundwork for this effort. Grafik strategists collaborated with executives to support a proposed change in their business model, consulting with representatives from all divisions, including mobility, networks, media services, and government services, while ensuring the involvement of leaders from various international offices. Our aim was to uncover shared themes—a common vision. We also conducted surveys with technology buyers across a dozen countries to gauge their views on satellite technology, Intelsat, and its competitors. The insights we gathered helped formulate a solution that enhanced the dialogue both internally and externally. The new brand mantra, "Imagine Here," encapsulates not only the potential within Intelsat but also the vast opportunities it creates for its customers. Grafik revamped the color palette and crafted a brand identity that highlighted the dependability of Intelsat technology and the benefits it offers. This rebranding effort is still in progress as the organization prepares for a global launch, but early indications show that the new brand is generating excitement and enthusiasm across the entire enterprise.

Data centers are often perceived as just large rooms filled with server racks, but that’s an oversimplification—comparable to merely calling a Lamborghini a fast car. Today, data centers serve as the critical infrastructure that supports the technology utilized by consumers and ensures the smooth operation of significant organizations. When Vantage Data Centers approached us, they were primarily a regional provider on the West Coast. Their leadership had a clear goal of evolving into a prominent global supplier serving hyperscalers, cloud service providers, and large enterprises. They requested our assistance in showcasing a transformed Vantage to the world. We delved deeply into Vantage’s revamped expertise and renewed vision through comprehensive interviews with the leadership team, industry analysts, and clients. We decided to adopt a single word that encapsulated their transition from a regional player to a global leader: Ready. Every aspect of the new Vantage Data Centers website was designed to reflect this strategic shift towards becoming a top provider of hyperscale data center solutions worldwide, requiring new messaging, a cohesive visual identity, and scalability for future global expansion. This effort was executed in both English and French. Vantage Data Centers’ strategies concerning power, cooling, sustainability, operations, and site selection position them as the preferred partner for implementing significant technological innovations—a reality we emphasize at every customer interaction. They have proven their ability to support long-term customer success and offer the flexibility to be deployed globally, adapting to the evolving needs of clients.
