The Town of Stratford previously operated independent PC workstations across its facilities, each necessitating separate maintenance and attention. Furthermore, every building had its own internet connection, which was prone to failure without any backup. Real-time access to surveillance cameras at schools and other locations was limited for the police, raising safety and response time concerns. To address these issues, the Town aimed to virtualize the workstations for centralized management, improved redundancy, and updated anti-virus protection. However, this required a complete upgrade of the IT infrastructure and network connectivity. In collaboration with the Town, Flagship designed, built, and currently manages a new data center infrastructure equipped with dedicated firewalls and switches for each building. This tailored solution incorporates various technologies to establish a secure, high-quality, and adaptable system that supports the virtualization of the town's workstations. Additionally, Flagship partnered with several network vendors to create a “dark fiber” network linking Town Hall, Police Headquarters, and the Public Safety Building, complete with built-in redundancy. This means that if a line goes down, it automatically switches to backup lines using alternate technology. With the workstations now virtualized and managed centrally by Town staff, costs related to repairs, software upgrades, and security have significantly decreased. Flagship oversees the core infrastructure, alleviating the burden on town staff while ensuring high-quality remote monitoring and management. Surveillance cameras at various sites can now be accessed in real-time, and recorded footage can be streamed for later review, improving response times to incidents like accidents, disputes, or ongoing crimes. Overall, the system now offers a robust and secure defense against breaches or malware attacks.

Case Study: City of Norwich, CT

The City of Norwich faced a significant challenge as their Network Attached Storage (NAS) approached its end-of-life. LAN Technician Ray LaRose struggled to maintain the network's normal efficiency due to the system's lack of data deduplication and compression features. The former Managed Service Provider (MSP) did not empower the city staff to perform quick system updates or restore snapshots on their own, leading to increased operational costs as many issues required MSP involvement for resolution. Ray noted, “The ROI didn't pan out for our existing environment.” When Ray and IT Director Leon Barnowski created their Request for Proposal (RFP) to find a replacement system, they focused on features like ease of management, 10G networking, and solid-state disks. Although they considered traditional server/storage solutions, their past experiences led them to prefer a solution that would minimize vendor-related blame during problem resolution. They desired a single comprehensive solution from one provider. While Flagship, along with other respondents to the RFP, proposed traditional server/storage solutions that met the criteria and stayed within budget, Flagship went further by addressing the city's underlying issues. Their proposal included a Nutanix Hyperconverged infrastructure with an all-flash array, three network nodes, and a Veeam backup and replication system connecting City Hall and the Police Department. The implementation process was quick and efficient; Flagship's team spent one day at City Hall and returned a month later to finish the installation at the Police Department. Ray appreciated the team's thorough pre-planning, which minimized on-site configuration changes and limited downtime to just half an hour.
