Tiger Balm Digital Out-of-Home Matched Market Test

Tiger Balm

In 2021, Challenge Research helped Tiger Balm USA identify a new, more diverse consumer demographic that could be effectively targeted through an urban marketing strategy. Instead of inundating cities nationwide with out-of-home advertisements, the team opted to conduct further research to validate their concept. The Strategic Solution: Designing the Test Using a statistical algorithm, markets were paired based on sales trends and distribution data. These pairings were then refined to account for demographic diversity, urban density, rankings of physically demanding jobs (a key trait of the new target audience), and the presence of in-store media during the testing period. Three market pairs were chosen, with one market in each pair randomly assigned to receive digital out-of-home (DOOH) advertising, while the other would not. After the testing phase, markets exposed to DOOH advertising will be compared to those without it to assess the impact on sales and to evaluate whether the results justify expanding the strategy to additional markets. Determining the Surfaces Tiger Balm USA and E29 identified the most suitable DOOH platforms for the advertising campaign. Focusing on the new consumer segment, the team concluded that the best venues for advertising would be in transit areas, gyms, and sporting/entertainment locations. The Impact In markets where DOOH advertising is implemented, sales increased by approximately seven times weekly compared to markets without it. To ensure a return on investment (ROI) from DOOH, it is vital to establish a budget that aligns with the sales cycle of the product and the size of the market. For Tiger Balm, spending in larger and medium-sized markets should be approached with care due to their distinct sales patterns. Small markets are generally not recommended due to their lower sales volume, while large markets may demand a considerable budget, which may not be feasible for every client.

Developing a Private Label Coffee Brand

Westrock Coffee

The Challenge: Westrock Coffee aimed to introduce a new private label in the competitive ready-to-drink (RTD) coffee market. This led to the creation of Kohana—a smooth coffee-energy blend designed to support hardworking individuals during long shifts. The goal? Compete against Starbucks RTD and Monster Java while making a mark in convenience stores. Kohana needed to resonate with blue-collar and gig economy workers by providing authenticity, utility, and a striking design without any exaggeration. The Strategic Solution: E29 collaborated with Westrock to develop Kohana’s positioning, branding, and creative strategy from scratch: - Identifying the Market Gap: Discovered a niche between canned coffee and energy drinks, offering smooth, crash-free energy. - Target Audience: Recognized the “Backbone Workers”—construction teams, nurses, and gig workers. - Defined Kohana’s Purpose: Positioned as the strongest coffee for the hardest workers. Positioning & Messaging: - Centered the brand around the theme: Energy for the Real Workday. - Emphasized Hawaiian heritage through themes of grit and resilience, avoiding clichés. - Created the Backbone Manifesto: “No crash. No burn. Just real energy.” Design & Activation: - Crafted bold, functional can designs for strong shelf presence. - Established a brand voice of “Fuel, not fancy.” - Suggested genuine partnerships and convenience store strategies. The Impact: Kohana made a notable debut in a crowded market: - Clear Positioning: The first RTD coffee-energy drink aimed at frontline workers. - Authentic Narrative: A heritage rooted in Hawaiian endurance. - Shelf-Ready: Packaging designed for impulse buying and perceived value. - Scalable Strategy: Toolkit prepared for national expansion.

Infraway Launch: E29’s Go-to-Market Success

Infraway

Having established a robust brand foundation, Infraway was set to launch its first product—the L1 wearable device, which utilizes Dual Heat Technology. To achieve success, it was essential to educate consumers, build trust in a new market category, and drive fast sales. The Challenge Infraway aimed high with its goals: to inform a market that was not familiar with infrared and heat dual therapy, to launch quickly with a target date of March 2025, to achieve sales of 2,500 units monthly, and to foster brand equity for future entry into sports and wellness sectors. The Strategic Solution E29 crafted a comprehensive go-to-market strategy that connected brand narratives with performance metrics. Target Audience: Wealthy, health-oriented golfers aged 40 to 75 with household incomes over $100K, driven by a desire for mobility and longevity. Customer Journey Mapping: Created an effective pathway from initial awareness to brand loyalty. Digital Trifecta: Harmonized owned, earned, and paid media for optimal reach. Execution Highlights: Website + SEO: A Webflow site optimized for conversion and storytelling, enhanced by a content and blog strategy. Paid Media: Meta and Google campaigns that balanced lifestyle appeal with performance evidence. Creative Platform: “It’s Your Move” engaged audiences by connecting sports, lifestyle, and recovery. CRM: Automated systems created pre-launch email lists, recovered shopping carts, and fostered post-purchase loyalty. Influencer + UGC: Partnerships with golfers and wellness influencers provided genuine endorsements. Optimization: Real-time tracking of KPIs enabled swift adjustments to creative content and spending. The Results The March 5, 2025 launch was successful across all digital channels. A high-value email CRM list was created, enhancing retargeting and referrals. The message “Move Better, Play Better” proved more effective than pain-relief positioning. A repeatable launch strategy has been established, now poised for expansion into pickleball, skiing, and the broader wellness markets.
