Birmingham Community Charter High School

In March 2020, educational institutions nationwide began closing their doors due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This shutdown compelled school districts to quickly transition from traditional classroom settings to remote learning. For the 2020-2021 academic year, Birmingham Community Charter High School (BCCHS) aimed to implement the most effective solutions to enhance the remote learning experience for both students and teachers. IT Director Vic Chalabian, a long-time client of Datalink Networks, relied on them to identify suitable IT solutions that would facilitate a seamless remote learning environment. BCCHS needed a solution that could accommodate the conferencing and collaboration needs of administrators, faculty, and students. Datalink Networks recommended the Microsoft 365 licensing (A-3) plan, featuring Microsoft Teams as a platform for web conferencing and voice communication. Sarah Obloy, BCCHS's Technology Coordinator, noted, "The evolving landscape of education has prompted school leaders to closely evaluate how content is delivered and which tools are necessary to maintain safe, secure, and easy connections between students and teachers." The engineering team at Datalink Networks integrated Aeries Student Information Systems (SIS) and Canvas Learning Management System (LMS) into Teams. This setup allowed teachers to organize class files and documents and establish a Teams Channel in preparation for the school year. If there were any changes in student enrollment throughout the year, the Teams system would automatically update based on the SIS. Additionally, Datalink Networks offers around-the-clock monitoring of the Office 365 tenant to ensure cloud security, compliance, and proper administrative controls. They also partnered with New Horizons, the largest IT training company in the world, to launch an innovative initiative called the “Teams Student Intern Program” for BCCHS, which commenced in August 2020 with a selection of 10 students.

Advanced Math & Science Charter School

Challenge - Advanced Math and Science Academy Charter School (AMSA) was encountering high costs for hardware and software maintenance while trying to provide comprehensive computer science programs for their students. To maintain efficiency and deliver quality education, AMSA sought a budget-friendly solution to both operate and grow its computer science curriculum. Solution - Instead of consistently upgrading hardware to meet software requirements, AMSA adopted Azure Lab Services. This cloud solution is set up to host the necessary software for computer science courses and operates through virtual machines during specific class hours or as required by students. Benefit - Azure Lab Services enables AMSA to run demanding programs on less powerful devices, manage students' usage time in the virtual machines, deploy and scale quickly, and easily experiment with new software.
