Patent-Opposition Database
Millions globally face challenges in accessing the medicines essential for their survival, largely due to the high costs associated with drugs. One significant factor contributing to these prices is the presence of patents, which can hinder the creation of affordable generic alternatives for vital medications. While patents are typically seen as safeguards for innovation, not all are established or approved equally. To address this issue, MSF collaborated with Crush & Lovely to develop a central database aimed at assisting dedicated individuals worldwide who are fighting against unjustified patents by providing a platform for sharing resources, best practices, and documentation. Previously, information was disseminated through informal networks where data was stored on personal computers, hard drives, and email accounts with numerous attachments. MSF recognized the potential for enhancement and the positive impact such improvements could have on those in dire need of affordable medicine. Since the launch of the online database, hundreds of documents from organizations and individuals in countries like India, Thailand, Brazil, Argentina, and the US have been made available, contributing to ongoing efforts that have successfully challenged significant unjustified patents.
