Cloud Migration of Atlassian Server Tools
A high-tech software company in Spain, with over 250 employees and a focus on designing and manufacturing autonomous industrial robots, needed to upgrade its Atlassian ecosystem. The firm was using outdated versions of Jira and Confluence Server, which posed compliance risks related to ISO 27001 and GDPR, resulted in high IT maintenance demands, and offered limited integration with cloud-centric tools such as Bitbucket Cloud and Slack. Following Atlassian's announcement regarding the end-of-life for server products, company leadership had to navigate the challenge of ensuring security, efficiency, and user adoption while addressing cultural resistance to transitioning to the cloud. We collaborated with the client to create and implement a phased migration plan to Atlassian Cloud. This process included stakeholder workshops, auditing plugins, and creating a detailed migration roadmap. Utilizing Atlassian’s official migration tools (JCMA, CCMA, BCMA), we securely transferred Jira projects, Confluence spaces, and Bitbucket repositories while cleansing outdated data and workflows. We also reconfigured and optimized integrations, including Teams + Jira Cloud, Bitbucket Cloud pipelines, SAML SSO, and external reporting tools, to maintain compliance and security. To facilitate user adoption, we provided customized training for power users and administrators and established a searchable Confluence knowledge base that compared previous and new processes. Following the migration, we refined workflows, adjusted permissions to follow the principle of least privilege, and offered ongoing support to ensure seamless adoption. The results were significant: Jira uptime increased from 92.3% to 99.9%, average ticket resolution time fell from 2.5 days to under 1 day, and IT maintenance time dropped from 18 hours to less than 3 hours per week. Employee satisfaction rose from 68% to 89%, compliance targets were met, and DevOps pipelines were improved.
