MLOps Platform for Chip Manufacturers

Unknown

**Problem** The client aimed to create a user-friendly web platform for their MVP, building upon existing machine learning code. This platform would enable users to upload datasets, register microchips, and conduct scalable end-to-end training experiments in the cloud. Prior to the project, model training was partially manual, and there was a lack of a cohesive connection between the platform and the machine learning experiments. Our collaborative objective was to integrate all components of the platform, introduce necessary new features, and implement authentication and authorization systems. **Solution** A team of four engineers from Brainstorm Developers focused on various aspects of the project, including the frontend (using ReactJS), backend (NodeJS), bridge code between the backend and Ray Cluster (Python), and infrastructure (AWS). Among the completed features are: the entire platform is hosted on AWS, utilizing Amazon Aurora MySQL for the database, EC2 instances for model training with Ray for machine learning experiments, S3 for storage, and DataSync for automated data transfers. **Results** The Brainstorm Developers play a vital role in product design, decision-making, and planning. Development is carried out using the Scrum agile project management framework, with tools like Slack, Jira, and GitHub. As of this writing, the collaboration is ongoing, and the outlook is promising.

**Challenge:** The client encountered a significant challenge in optimizing computer vision models for battery-operated hardware that has limited memory and processing capabilities. For a model to be effective on such devices, its input size must remain under 100x100 pixels, the architecture should not be overly complex with many layers, and both inference speed and accuracy must be preserved to a reasonable extent. **Approach:** Two developers from Brainstorm Computer Vision and AI collaborated on the algorithm development for this project. Their responsibilities included assisting with model training and optimization, as well as analyzing and augmenting the dataset to enable the model to better handle edge cases. The experiments were executed in Python utilizing the TensorFlow framework on AWS EC2 instances that were overseen by the Ray cloud computing framework. For dataset augmentation, a PyTorch segmentation model based on the PointRend architecture was employed to create realistic new sample images featuring overlapping objects, addressing the issue of trained models struggling with scenarios where two individuals overlapped. Additional tasks included:

**Issue:** The client experienced rapid growth in both the number of paying customers and the volume of textual reviews processed daily. The existing backend system couldn't accommodate this growth, resulting in significant slowdowns, with page load times exceeding 60 seconds. Brainstorm was tasked with enhancing the backend infrastructure while minimizing impact on the ReactJS frontend, focusing on optimizing API endpoints, database design, and query performance. **Solution:** Two developers from Brainstorm undertook a comprehensive refactor of the backend, making substantial improvements to the codebase's organization and clarity while separating various services. Key enhancements included: **Results:** As a result of the modifications made by Brainstorm's engineers, the average duration of complex database queries decreased by a factor of ten, and total API requests dropped by 20%. Clients observed a considerable increase in platform speed, leading to high praise from the CTO upon project completion.
