Following the 2009 financial crisis, global institutions turned to Asia for growth, and Maybank faced the challenge of fortifying its brand to safeguard its regional presence while leveraging the region's expected growth. The goal was to evolve from Malaysia's leading bank into a credible financial powerhouse within ASEAN. Maybank planned to achieve this by consolidating its position in Asia and international markets and revitalizing its brand to reflect both organic growth and acquisitions. The bank defined its mission as 'Humanising Financial Services,' prompting us to clarify what this meant for the bank's leadership, employees, customers, and the industry overall. We undertook a comprehensive engagement process with bank employees and partners at all levels to explore the implications of ‘humanising.’ This engagement was essential in articulating a clear brand promise. The refreshed Maybank brand strategy, architecture, and identity were significant factors in the bank's record-setting commercial success in the years that followed. Within a year of the new strategy's implementation, Maybank soared to become Malaysia’s leading brand (according to the New Straits Times).
