The Blue Box played a key role in bringing Broken Shepherds to fruition, a digital platform aimed at enhancing transparency and accountability in nonprofit and faith-based organizations. We created cross-platform applications for iOS, Android, and the web utilizing React Native (Expo) and Next.js, backed by a scalable NestJS backend. This platform equips users with robust tools to explore nonprofit organizations, assess their transparency, and back causes they believe in. To streamline the onboarding process for nonprofits, we incorporated Google Document AI, which enables organizations to upload their IRS Form 990 and automatically extract essential financial information. This integration significantly cuts down on manual data input while enhancing accuracy and reliability. The platform also features secure in-app donations powered by Nuvei, allowing contributions through credit cards, debit cards, and ACH transfers, enabling users to donate directly to organizations. In addition to helping users discover nonprofits, Broken Shepherds serves as a secure streaming service for the investigative docuseries The Religion Business. Streaming is facilitated by Mux and includes DRM protection, Apple FairPlay, and Chromecast support, ensuring high-quality and secure content delivery across various devices. Users can access hundreds of thousands of nonprofits in the United States, analyze financial insights on fund distribution, explore a proprietary Light Rating transparency system, and find nearby volunteer opportunities and regional humanitarian efforts. Broken Shepherds transcends technology by empowering donors and volunteers to make informed, confident decisions. Combining transparency tools for nonprofits, donation functionalities, volunteer discovery, and investigative storytelling, the platform sets a new benchmark for accountability in nonprofit leadership. IPSAIQ is a legal intelligence platform that utilizes AI-driven semantic search to compile and analyze legal case information. Users can interact with the system through a conversational interface to access pertinent cases from a structured knowledge base. The platform already incorporated essential AI features, such as automated extraction of legal data, generation of embeddings, and semantic searching within vectorized content. The Blue Box was brought in to assess and enhance the current architecture to boost efficiency, scalability, and retrieval accuracy. Instead of creating a new system, the focus was on improving the existing AI pipeline. The team began by examining the Python-based scraping system that gathers legal case data. Enhancements were made to standardize the information and unify key metadata fields like jurisdiction, case type, dates, and parties involved, which improved the quality and organization of data entering the AI pipeline. The vector storage architecture was upgraded through Weaviate, with a redesigned document chunking approach that segments legal texts based on their semantic structure rather than fixed token sizes, thereby retrieving more relevant context during searches. Structured metadata was kept separate from embedded content, allowing for hybrid searches that integrate filters and vector similarity. The architecture was also updated to facilitate incremental indexing for future data expansion. Additionally, Strapi was implemented as the CMS layer to enhance governance over the legal content entering the platform. These updates led to a more efficient and scalable AI solution while preserving the existing user experience.
