OUR STORY

Founded in 2018 by Joe Friel, Simon Dupree, and Ramy Al Shurafa after tech bootcamps at Founders and Coders and Gaza Sky Geeks, Yalla embodies the spirit of collaboration and social impact, as its Arabic name suggests. Beginning with Connect 5, a mental health training tool commissioned by Health Education England, the team expanded remotely despite Gaza's blockade challenges. Over three years, Yalla grew to a diverse team across Palestine, the UK, the Netherlands, and Germany, partnering with organisations like Shannon Trust and Social Mobility Foundation to deliver impactful tech solutions. Celebrated for innovation in tech-for-good, Yalla invested in community workshops and developed a guide for remote-first cooperatives. In 2024, embracing its multicultural team, Yalla continues to advance opportunities in technology, undeterred by geopolitical challenges.

Tempo Time Credits

Facilitating digital transformation for a prominent charity in the UK to enhance volunteerism and community involvement 01 Origin: Tempo Time Credits, the largest time recognition initiative in the UK, collaborates with organizations across the country to boost community engagement. They motivate individuals to volunteer by providing benefits such as improved wellbeing and skill development. 02 Our Involvement: Over the past decade, Tempo encountered difficulties due to outdated offline processes that restricted expansion. We were invited to digitize Tempo Time Credits, revolutionizing their operations and creating new possibilities. Our extensive involvement encompassed the entire digital transformation process, from assessing user requirements to designing and implementing a new digital platform. 03 Our Contributions: 1.0 Digital Transactions and Discovery Platform: We launched a digital tool with functionalities resembling financial applications, allowing users to check balances, view transaction histories, and manage Time Credits online or in-person. The platform also functions as a marketplace for members to discover opportunities for earning and spending, while enabling staff and partners to manage profiles and activities, and assisting communities in coordinating volunteer efforts. 2.0 Insights and User Privacy: We improved Tempo's oversight of the Time Credits system with a dashboard for monitoring each Time Credit, featuring data visualization and export capabilities for in-depth usage analysis. Prioritizing user privacy, we followed best practices in data collection and security. 3.0 User-Centered Development: Our development methodology involved short cycles of design and implementation, concentrating on user feedback to address diverse needs. This flexible approach proved essential during COVID-19, facilitating a transition to online Time Credit opportunities. 4.0 Scalability and Collaboration: We adopted a sustainable development approach to reduce technical debt. After launching, we plan to continue iterative improvements to adapt the product in response to user feedback and evolving requirements.

A tool for guiding Universal Credit claims

Developing an award-winning reusable tool to help individuals navigate the Universal Credit claiming process 01 Background The complexities of the Universal Credit application process often hinder eligible individuals from finalizing their claims, resulting in challenges such as rent arrears, evictions, and homelessness. These issues create significant stress for claimants and financial burdens for housing providers, who must address these impacts, support tenants, and offer rehousing advice. 02 Our Involvement Hyde Housing Association was in search of a digital partner to develop an intuitive online tool that would assist claimants throughout their application journey. This tool was designed to facilitate both self-service and advisor-assisted interactions, with a goal of reusability across the benefits sector. It has received accolades, including 'Most Innovative New Product' at the Housing Innovation Awards. 03 Our Deliverables 1.0 User-Friendly Companion Tool We simplified the Universal Credit system by eliminating complicated steps like account creation and implemented local storage for easier user access. 2.0 Supportive Environment We crafted a clear content strategy that took users' emotional states into account. The Universal Credit process was broken down into manageable steps, jargon was eliminated, and helpful tips were provided. 3.0 Open Source Framework The tool was designed for easy adoption by other organizations, including customizable branding and content options. We developed user personas to inform design and user testing. Within the first three months, over 60 organizations had adopted the tool.

Chiltern Music Therapy

Demonstrating the significant influence of Music Therapy through a website that enhances the target audience's comprehension of the services offered. 01 Origin of the Project The initiative was driven by the need to address the public's limited understanding of Music Therapy. The objective was to raise awareness by creating intuitive user paths, focusing on specific audiences, and effectively conveying Chiltern's mission. Upgrading the website was also essential for staff to share information broadly, which was particularly important following the organization's digital transformation and rebranding efforts. 02 Our Role Our collaboration continued with this new initiative, where we outlined a 14-week plan encompassing discovery and definition phases, site mapping, and prototyping before the actual website development. 03 Our Deliverables 1.0 UX Phase We thoroughly analyzed Chiltern's current website, utilizing insights to shape and design the new site. This included identifying main objectives and user personas, which led to the development of varied user stories to meet the needs of different stakeholders, such as donors, parents, schools, and hospitals. A detailed site map was created to provide a clear overview for both the design and development teams. 2.0 Design Phase We merged creative research with insights from UX workshops to create a prototype of the site. Usability testing was a crucial aspect of this phase, ensuring the site's user-friendliness, along with collaborating on a CMS structure for easy updates by Chiltern staff. 3.0 Development Phase We employed Webflow for its versatility and CMS capabilities. Our emphasis was on optimizing the referral process with a secure inquiry form and integrating a booking system for events through Eventbrite. The overall aim was to make Music Therapy more accessible and to strengthen Chiltern's outreach and effectiveness in providing services.
