The previous setup depended on a data center-based Windows File Server, Active Directory, and an email server, all linked through a costly fiber optic MPLS broadband service. Vicinity Counts on Datto BCDR to Protect Critical

Council of Athabascan Tribal Governments

The Council of Athabascan Tribal Governments (CATG), located in Fort Yukon, Alaska, sought assistance with their data backup system. They were using two outdated systems that failed to meet their needs and had subpar business continuity and disaster recovery (BCDR) solutions, one of which was only partially implemented. CATG urgently required a strong BCDR solution to protect their data and systems. However, many providers, even well-known multinational firms, were hesitant to take on the project due to logistical challenges in rural Alaska. Vicinity and Datto were committed to providing CATG with the latest IT and security solutions despite these difficulties. They worked diligently to deliver Datto BCDR appliances to CATG, ensuring the safety of their critical data and systems. “Rural Alaska poses unique challenges—there's no FedEx or UPS. We had to send the appliances to our office in Fairbanks first. One of our account executives then took them to the airport and managed to get them onto a Cessna Grand Caravan to reach the village, which required several stops along the way. We utilized nearly every available transportation method to deliver the appliances. Even then, there was more to do; we needed to pre-seed the hard drives and ship them back to Datto to upload to the cloud using the same utility aircraft,” Robert recounts. “Datto BCDR is easy to set up. I assisted CATG with the installation remotely. I assured them, ‘Even though I’m not on-site, we can get this up and running from here.’ We registered the device, brought it online, integrated it with vCenter, and successfully backed up the data,” explains Robert Thurston, Chief Operating Officer of Vicinity.
