Restoring Accurate Tracking and ROAS for Retailer
A small online retail business, investing around 10,000€ monthly in paid advertising, needed to address issues with broken tracking systems in Google Tag Manager (GTM), Google Analytics 4 (GA4), and Google Ads, while also managing user consent effectively. Valanor was engaged to fix these tracking problems and enhance the return on ad spend (ROAS).
**Objective**: Resolve misalignment in tracking systems and consent management to ensure accurate attribution and boost paid performance, particularly focusing on increasing ROAS.
**Challenges**: The client's tracking setup was disjointed. GTM containers were incorrectly configured, essential events were not being triggered as they should, and consent processes were inadequate. Consequently, the business lacked clarity; attribution was inconsistent, and ad performance data was skewed.
**Approach**: Valanor conducted a comprehensive audit of the client’s GTM configuration, mapping all event sources and destinations. The consent management through Cookiebot was assessed for both compliance and effectiveness. Valanor prioritized fixing issues within the WooCommerce layer and then reorganized crucial GTM triggers and tags to ensure seamless tracking.
**Solution**: Valanor redesigned the GTM integration to accurately direct events to GA4 and Google Ads, implementing appropriate triggers and consent-compliant data layers. Full integration of Cookiebot was achieved to honor user consent. The accuracy and coverage of tracking were verified throughout the entire funnel.
**Result**: ROAS surged from 80% to 190% after the implementation of clean tracking, which facilitated more precise targeting and attribution. Ad expenditures were optimized, and the marketing team regained trust in their data.
**Conclusion**: Trustworthy tracking and effective consent management are essential for successful advertising, rather than mere compliance issues. By clarifying the client’s tracking systems, Valanor provided enhanced insights, improved decision-making, and greater returns.
