Embrace the Wilderness: Redefining Clear Lake Country Clear Lake Country, a hidden tourism treasure located at the edge of Riding Mountain National Park, collaborated with UpHouse to update their decade-old branding. As Manitoba's pioneer in "place branding," the original identity had successfully attracted visitors during the summer, but it lacked flexibility and no longer resonated with the area's core values. The new branding aimed to encapsulate the essence of Clear Lake: a community-focused tourism center with a foundation in nature, local businesses, and self-guided adventures. Through workshops and collaboration with stakeholders, a key insight emerged—people come here to reconnect, explore, and embrace the wilderness. This concept became the foundation of the new brand, highlighted by the tagline “Let the Wild In,” which encouraged travelers to immerse themselves in nature, spontaneity, and personal exploration. We developed a versatile visual identity system featuring seven fonts, custom illustrations, and icons, enabling the Clear Lake team to showcase seasonal activities and narratives throughout the year. Additionally, we created a minimalist, image-driven website designed to inspire independent exploration. A co-branded winter video campaign with Travel Manitoba utilized the phrase “When your heart needs discovery” to generate interest in off-season tourism, resulting in 2.03 million impressions and 1.3 million video views on Meta, YouTube, and OTT platforms. Most significantly, this initiative provided Clear Lake with a sustainable brand poised for growth with its community—designed to adapt, uplift, and strengthen connections among people and with the land. This endeavor was more than just a rebranding; it was a revival of the very reasons visitors are drawn to Clear Lake.

Camp Cantina: Where Elegance Meets Relaxation When sommelier and wine sales representative Megan Tymura decided to launch a wine bar, deli, and provisions shop in Clear Lake, Manitoba, she aimed to create a wine culture that's approachable. Camp Cantina would embody sophistication without pretense—a welcoming place where delicious food and wine converge with the charm of a lakeside town. Right from the beginning, UpHouse collaborated with Megan to establish the name, brand narrative, and visual identity. In our initial meeting, the name “Camp Cantina” was conceived, perfectly encapsulating the essence of her vision. “Camp” connected to the laid-back, outdoor atmosphere of Clear Lake, while “Cantina” offered a nod to European wine and cured meats, infusing the brand with a sense of elegance. Together, these elements created a warm contrast: both refined and familiar. We then delved into moodboards, historical research, and visual inspirations—drawing from the notable Tudor-style “Danceland” building housing the bar, local heritage, and Megan’s unique preferences. We crafted a versatile identity system, featuring a motif that cleverly combines a “C” with a wine glass and a star, resonating with the brand’s playful, poetic slogan: Taste the Stars. We designed menus, coasters, matchbooks, and inclusive signage—all reflecting the atmosphere Megan envisioned. The outcome? A brand that felt personal, timeless, and instantly endearing. Camp Cantina opened to local acclaim in June 2023. Most notably, Megan was deeply touched to see how authentically the brand embodied the passion she infused into her dream.

Let’s Talk About SARAH: A Campaign that Transformed Whisper Networks into a Movement for Change Survivor’s Hope Crisis Centre (SHCC) recognized that it needed more than just awareness; it aimed to change perceptions, decrease stigma, and encourage action. Located in rural Manitoba, SHCC provides trauma-informed support to those affected by sexual violence through counseling, advocacy, and healing programs. However, they were caught in a damaging cycle: stigma deterred survivors from speaking out, which made it difficult to prove the demand for services and obtain funding. UpHouse collaborated with SHCC to develop Let’s Talk About SARAH, a grassroots initiative named after their Sexual Assault Recovery and Healing (SARAH) program. The objective was to lower stigma and raise awareness of their services, particularly in small-town communities where discussions about sexual violence are often silenced. To engage the community, we utilized the concept of small-town gossip. The phrase “Did you hear about SARAH?” was featured in bus shelters, newspapers, and public areas, accompanied by a QR code and minimal explanation. This tactic sparked curiosity, prompting clicks that led to discussions. Subsequent phases included direct messages like “Sexual violence occurs in our towns. Let’s talk about SARAH,” while also highlighting community members as “Friends of SARAH” who could act as allies. The campaign spanned seven months across Meta, YouTube, Spotify, and local media platforms. Despite encountering media challenges and advertising bans, it resulted in a noticeable increase in calls, walk-ins, and overall engagement. When SARAH faced a cut in federal funding in April 2024, the campaign's messaging was revived to rally support. Within weeks, SHCC raised $30,000 through crowdfunding, secured $25,000 in emergency provincial funds, and ultimately restored three years of federal funding. This campaign demonstrated that even in quiet communities, people are willing to engage in conversation when provided with the appropriate message.
