**BACKGROUND** Introduce your business and its functions. Little Bird HR operates as a specialized digital platform designed for K–12 school staff. We are a professional organization providing employee benefits and HR support at work sites. **OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE** What challenge did you seek to address through u2i? We engaged u2i to design and code our HR technology system, known as Little Bird Nest. **SOLUTION** What was the extent of their involvement? u2i developed our human resources information system (HRIS), which streamlines the entire onboarding process and integrates with our payroll and benefits administration tools. Our entire infrastructure operates on software, developed with Ruby on Rails and the Bootstrap framework. The database is hosted on Amazon Web Services (AWS). They have delivered multiple feature sets and outlined a roadmap for 4–5 significant upgrades. The platform is live and currently running on version 2.0. What does the team composition look like? We collaborate with three developers and a scrum master from u2i and have the flexibility to adjust the team size based on our cash flow. How did you partner with u2i? I was introduced to their team through a referral. What has been your financial investment with them? We have invested approximately $700,000 in their services. What is the current status of this engagement? Our collaboration with u2i began in March 2016 and is ongoing. While we may reduce the scale of development slightly, we are not planning to halt it completely. **RESULTS & FEEDBACK** What evidence can you provide that shows the success of this partnership? Currently, around 2,000 school employees utilize our software, and we have received positive feedback from clients. They appreciate the various updates to our product and frequently share new experiences for us to address. Our system enhances efficiency in managing teacher-specific administrative tasks for schools. We survey clients after their onboarding process to gauge their satisfaction with Little Bird Nest, and we currently hold an average rating of 8.7 out of 10, which is quite favorable. We haven't encountered any significant crashes or bugs related to their work. How did u2i perform in terms of project management? U2i employs the Scrum methodology for their projects. We have daily check-ins at 8 a.m. with u2i’s Polish team, myself, and our internal product manager, along with larger meetings twice a week to review our backlog and functional requirements. We have streamlined our internal processes through iterations. After starting with Pivotal Tracker, we shifted to the Kanban project tracking framework, which has proven effective. The team meticulously monitors progress and provides regular updates. What impressed you most about them? u2i boasts highly skilled developers with deep technical expertise in products, applications, and emerging technologies. They recruit the top 5% of development talent in their field. Their profit-sharing structure encourages each resource to take ownership of their work and strive for excellence. Are there areas where they could improve? While they provide adequate support for our products, which depend on smooth operation, prioritizing this area could enhance their service. What advice would you give to future clients of theirs? Clients should participate in the team selection process. Meeting the developers will ensure that the right skills are applied to your project. It's also beneficial to understand how to write user stories and confirm that your team is equipped to manage this aspect.
