Do IT Like Ukraine 2022
The Russian-Ukrainian war stands out from prior conflicts due to its extensive use of advanced technology. Ukraine is receiving precision missiles and air defense systems, while drones are deployed on the battlefield to monitor Russian positions. Modern software is used to coordinate military operations, and robust defenses are in place against Russian cyberattacks. Additionally, the country's thriving IT sector generates substantial revenue for the national budget and assists volunteer organizations in obtaining humanitarian aid, weapons, and equipment for millions. When the full-scale invasion began, the Ukrainian government initially overlooked the IT industry, leading to various challenges: a travel ban on IT specialists, lack of exemptions for IT employees, and currency regulations. The IT Ukraine Association reached out for assistance in addressing these issues with government and society. Our response was the "Do It Like Ukraine" project, a compelling 50-page infographic report highlighting the IT sector's role in the Ukrainian economy and its contributions to the war effort. This research effectively communicated to Ukrainian officials the importance of engaging with the IT industry. The study involved the participation of 147 companies and 13 regional IT clusters and was targeted at decision-makers in the government. To ensure clarity, we made the design straightforward, utilizing basic graphics, maps, illustrations, and concise analytical texts. The study resulted in over 50 media publications, reaching approximately 60,000 viewers. Key recommendations included easing travel for IT employees, establishing a booking system for IT professionals, and simplifying currency regulations. Consequently, IT exports increased by 5.8% in 2022, with regulatory simplifications contributing to this growth.
