Rapid validation of a therapist matching web app

Health Match 360 reached out to thoughtbot for assistance with an app designed to help individuals find therapists. This service connects potential patients with licensed mental health therapists in the Greater Cincinnati Area. Users seeking therapy create a secure account, fill out a questionnaire regarding their needs and preferences, and are matched with a therapist using Health Match 360's proprietary matching algorithm. **Challenge:** Health Match 360 had developed an initial Minimum Viable Product (MVP) without generating revenue and required support for design and product strategy. **Solution:** thoughtbot conducted a design sprint for Health Match 360 to validate the assumptions behind their initial MVP iteration. On the first day, thoughtbot Designers collaborated with Bailey and Jeremiah to pinpoint the problem statement, develop a user journey, and identify underlying assumptions. By the end of the second day, they had created a complete storyboard outlining the user journey for testing. An interactive prototype was then developed based on this storyboard over the next two days. Assumptions were cataloged in a table that included validation criteria and testing strategies, which informed both the prototype and the interview script. **Outcome:** Shortly after the Product Design Sprint (PDS), the founders of Health Match 360 utilized the results of the PDS to apply for a grant. They were excited to discover a few weeks later that their proposal had been accepted. Bailey and Jeremiah confidently presented that they had a validated business requirement to create a patient-tested prototype that would elevate their company. Congratulations to the entire team!

Joydrive: Going from concept to Super Bowl Sunday

Joydrive eases the car-buying process by offering a straightforward online platform where users can explore various dealers for both new and used vehicles, obtain instant trade-in valuations from Kelly Blue Book, and arrange for cars to be picked up and delivered directly to their homes, all through a single app. Seeking guidance to develop their product, Joydrive turned to thoughtbot for strategic technical partnership. Following a successful beta test with thoughtbot, Joydrive launched its service with a Super Bowl commercial to introduce it to the public. CEO and Founder Hunter Gorham needed to find a suitable technical partner to bring his vision to fruition. He learned about thoughtbot from a trusted friend, Matt Marino, the Vice President at Eastdil Secured, who recommended thoughtbot for its problem-solving capabilities in areas where Eastdil Secured struggled. To mitigate high-risk factors, thoughtbot conducted extensive research, spoke with experts, mapped out data models, and explored various aspects, including insurance, warehousing, and financing. They filtered out unrealistic ideas to identify practical solutions, creating a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) in just six weeks. This rapid development helped clarify their roadmap and address genuine needs while reducing risks. With continuous iterative design and thoughtbot acting as their CTO, Joydrive benefited from thoughtbot's development skills in making decisions regarding technology stack, hosting, and deployment. After several revisions, the MVP proved successful, and customers began purchasing cars through the app, positioning Joydrive to scale up and onboard additional dealers.

Transforming algorithms & a vision into a product

Real Simple Energy is an early-stage startup focused on simplifying the process of consumer energy selection to help users save money. Co-founders Trent Crow and Matt Herpich, both with backgrounds in the power and energy industries, approached thoughtbot to assist in designing, building, and launching their Minimum Viable Product (MVP). The challenge they faced was that while Matt possessed skills in data science and coding, neither he nor Trent had experience in developing web applications. They had a database where they were applying algorithms and Python scripts to calculate energy costs, but they needed to integrate this intelligence into a complete front-end and back-end system to deliver to real customers. To kick off the collaboration, thoughtbot facilitated a design session with Real Simple Energy to validate their assumptions and prioritize a comprehensive list of potential features. In addition to showcasing their user-centered design skills, the thoughtbot team collaborated with Real Simple Energy to create the initial version of their product as a Django application, featuring both an administrative interface and user portal. As the application expands, it will require the capacity to manage increasing data and may eventually utilize machine learning, making Python an ideal choice. As a result, their new SaaS solution was successfully launched for a select beta group of 15 paying customers. Matt and Trent were pleased to find that the project remained within budget, and the only unexpected outcome was that the final product offered more features than initially planned. The co-founders gained valuable insights into product design and development that will be beneficial as Real Simple Energy continues to evolve.
