Implementing LiteLLM Proxy on AWS ECS

We recently had the chance to deploy LiteLLM Proxy in a self-hosted environment on AWS ECS for one of our clients. The primary goals of this project were to tackle quota restrictions, guarantee high availability, and distribute the load among various language model providers. Our solution is founded on a solid architecture set up on AWS, which includes: - Amazon ECS (Elastic Container Service) to host and manage LiteLLM Proxy containers. - Cross-account IAM roles to optimize the usage of AWS Bedrock quotas. - Amazon Bedrock to access a range of AI models. The deployment of LiteLLM Proxy on ECS involved several important steps: 1. Setting up an S3 bucket to hold LiteLLM Proxy configuration files (in YAML format). 2. Within an existing ECS cluster: - Creating a task definition to pull the configuration from S3 and run LiteLLM Proxy containers - Configuring ECS services to ensure consistent availability 3. Establishing cross-account IAM roles: - With custom IAM policies that are adjustable per model - Acceptable by ECS tasks to enhance quota management across various AWS accounts 4. Activating different AI models in AWS accounts across multiple regions. To streamline these processes, we created Terraform modules. **Quota Management with LiteLLM Proxy** One of the significant hurdles our client faced was managing the quotas set by LLM providers. To address this issue, we devised a creative approach: - Utilizing cross-account IAM roles to access quotas from several AWS accounts - Configuring LiteLLM Proxy to smartly distribute API calls among these accounts. The implementation of LiteLLM Proxy on AWS ECS illustrates how a well-structured cloud solution can tackle complex issues related to heavy LLM usage. By taking advantage of AWS ECS, cross-account IAM roles, and LiteLLM Proxy, we successfully established a resilient, scalable, and cost-effective solution that allowed our client to: - Surmount LLM access quota restrictions. - Ensure high availability for their AI-driven services.

Refactoring from AWS Elastic Beantsalk to AWS ECS

As the client's platform gained popularity and the technical teams' requirements evolved towards more detailed functionality, several needs emerged. Beyond these immediate concerns, there were also long-term objectives, such as adopting a multi-region architecture, integrating AWS serverless tools, and implementing event-driven solutions. A thorough analysis revealed that WeWeb's current infrastructure was not well-suited for the cloud and did not adhere to best DevOps practices, creating challenges in optimizing it. Additionally, Elastic Beanstalk was no longer adequate for WeWeb’s granularity needs, prompting a project to refactor the architecture aimed at improving the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of the existing infrastructure. **Solution Overview** Following our analysis of the existing system, we were able to design a suitable, scalable target architecture to support WeWeb in the long run. The foundation of this architectural solution is load execution using AWS ECS (Elastic Container Service). This choice was made because ECS is a managed AWS service that facilitates container execution and requires significantly less maintenance and specialized skills compared to an AWS EKS (Kubernetes) cluster. The primary benefits of ECS include the chance to implement Infrastructure as Code using Terraform and CI/CD pipelines during this refactoring process.

Migrate to AWS with Elastic Kubernetes Service

To help them modernize their development practices and expand their services, our task was to support their transition to the AWS cloud, particularly using the Elastic Kubernetes Services (EKS) solution. Previously, they faced challenges in resilience and availability when deploying on the public cloud, as their monolithic application deployment complicated the management and maintenance of a sustainable environment.
