Working with Crossrail for over a decade

Crossrail

For 13 years, we've served as a reliable digital partner for Crossrail, assisting in the development of their online presence. Crossrail is the new high-frequency metro railway serving London and the South East. Our long-standing partnership began in 2009 when we won the contract through a competitive OJEU (Official Journal of the European Union) tender process. To ensure the Crossrail website’s success, it was crucial to continually update and mirror the advancements and stages of the infrastructure project. An iterative approach to design and development was vital for achieving this efficiently. Significant project milestones included:

A web app to help beat Covid

UK Health Security Agency

We had five weeks to create a strong, accessible, secure, and professional web application designed to identify asymptomatic Covid-19 cases through audio analysis of voice recordings. The primary objectives of the project included utilizing the NHS Design System for front-end design, which allowed us to produce static HTML prototypes to finalize the web app's aesthetics. This approach enabled us to quickly generate high-quality front-end code, contributing to the project's success within the tight timeframe. We employed Laravel, a well-known PHP web framework, to efficiently develop the web application. Our experience from previous survey projects informed our creation of a flexible questionnaire system, facilitating support for various studies and allowing for quick customization of questions as new needs emerged. Additionally, we developed an API for researchers to download the collected data. Accessibility was crucial, as the UKHSA aimed for over 40,000 participants; therefore, the website needed to be usable on any device, regardless of the user's browser version or any disabilities, such as visual impairments. Ultimately, we exceeded our target for user submissions by 62%, surpassing the goal of 40,000.

Prioritising stakeholder engagement

River Thames Scheme

The River Thames Scheme is a £501 million initiative aimed at alleviating flooding, to be implemented collaboratively by Surrey County Council and the Environment Agency. We previously developed websites for two other Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects, Crossrail and HS2, with a strong emphasis on stakeholder engagement. We were eager to collaborate with the River Thames Scheme team on their project. Our goal was to design a website that would enable Surrey County Council and the Environment Agency to move their content away from the gov.uk platform, facilitating direct communication with a diverse range of stakeholders, including local residents, river users, commuters, and MPs on issues relevant to them. In gathering and organizing information, we reviewed the scheme’s milestones, challenges, and the necessary details to keep users informed and involved. We categorized this information into logical segments, which facilitated further discussions about content and helped us determine the best ways to present complex information to users. We also created user job stories, which are narratives designed to map content to each stakeholder’s experience, ensuring users can reach their objectives effectively. These job stories provide the client with insights from a user’s perspective and help prioritize content. They serve as a reference point throughout the project. We then developed wireframes to test user journeys and accommodate the required information and content types. The interactive nature of the wireframes allowed for quick iterations and testing of our approach's flexibility. The client built the website using SquizMatrix CMS and the Bootstrap CSS framework, and we advised on the initial pages to create, ensuring that the first version of the website aligned with the overarching objectives of the River Thames Scheme.
