Dexcom G6 Sensor

Dexcom

The Dexcom G6 Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) System offers real-time glucose readings and is equipped with a water-resistant sensor that can be worn for 10 days and easily applied using an auto-applicator. The accompanying Dexcom G6 app provides instant access to glucose data on compatible smart devices. The Challenge Speck recognized the importance of helping Dexcom understand its varied target audience as a crucial first step. This involved concentrating on the user interface (UI) to guide many design requirements. The team found that the end-user demographic was much more diverse than anticipated, spanning different ages and specific occasional needs. Thus, the challenge was to create a product that catered to the primary older demographic while also addressing the needs of a smaller, yet significant, diverse subgroup. Additionally, the goal was to design medical equipment that is intuitive and user-friendly, even in hectic environments. The Process The Speck research and design team dedicated considerable time to observing users to gain insights into their needs and the environments in which the monitors are utilized. This required going beyond traditional industrial design methods to ensure empathy and understanding of users' experiences. With extensive observational data, Speck created a UI for multiple devices that integrates smoothly with the medical device to improve the overall user experience.

Gridscope Monitering System

GRIDWARE

Gridware enlisted the help of Speck Design to create initial prototypes for their Gridscope system. Gridscope is an innovative technology installed on power poles that detects anomalies using sensitive instruments such as a vibrometer and microphone. It monitors vibrations in the lines and captures distinctive acoustic and vibration signals generated during different events. Speck Design offered industrial design, mechanical engineering, and manufacturing support, enabling Gridware to test their equipment in real-world conditions. This testing was crucial in identifying important modifications needed before entering the market, ultimately leading to the final version of Gridscope. Speck Design focused on creating an attractive and functional prototype by utilizing advanced CAD software to create a 3D model of the Gridscope system for testing in different scenarios. We employed rapid prototyping methods to swiftly produce the necessary components for the prototype. Additionally, our mechanical engineering team ensured that the Gridscope system could endure the harsh environments it would face in real life. We conducted tests under various conditions to replicate real-world scenarios and confirm its expected performance, working with Gridware to pinpoint and rectify any design weaknesses. Lastly, Speck Design provided manufacturing support to assist Gridware in launching the Gridscope system. We aided in developing the required tooling and production techniques to facilitate mass production, alongside quality assurance services to ensure the Gridscope system met Gridware's high standards.

PLUS Autonomous Truck Driving

Plus IA

**The Challenge**: Speck Design undertook multiple projects to incorporate PlusDrive sensor arrays into American semi-trucks, focusing specifically on side mirror components for various truck models. One of the key challenges was to design the cover components in a way that they seamlessly integrated with the existing internal components created by Plus AI. The unique slope and bracket configurations complicated the surfacing process and made it difficult to balance both visual appeal and functionality. **The Process**: To tackle the design challenges typical of an aftermarket retrofit project, the Speck Design team took an engaged approach. They visited Plus AI’s headquarters to gather measurements, take photographs, and discuss essential details with the in-house engineers working on Plus AI systems. Through a series of concept reviews and iterations, the team refined concepts that adhered to each truck model's original design specifications while still introducing a distinct new look. Ultimately, by creatively optimizing space, they managed to reduce the size of the panel, improving manufacturing and assembly efficiency. **The Outcome**: The components within the PlusDrive systems are transforming transportation. Their Highly Automated Driving (HAD) technology is currently being used in several truck models across the US, including Peterbilt and Traton. Designed and optimized in part by Speck Design, the driver-in, PlusDrive systems are establishing new benchmarks for safety and performance, bringing the world closer to achieving full autonomy in the future.
