PressWorks serves academic and trade publishers in North America and Europe. For over twenty years, SmallCo has collaborated with book publishers, beginning with Harvard University Press, The University of Chicago Press, and Cork University Press. The former Director of UNC Press at Chapel Hill once told the SmallCo team, “Publishing involves many details, none of which seem particularly important—until they are.” In response, SmallCo developed the PressWorks suite of apps to meticulously manage and care for these details, ensuring they are readily accessible when needed. Each app has a specific function: Metadata Mavens utilize the PressWorks XML App to generate custom ONIX feeds; Editorial Assistants rely on the PressWorks Document Engine to streamline author communication; and editors use the Author App to enhance their management of author requests.

We recognized early on that our small team would benefit from a custom application.” Developing a Custom App SmallCo created a suite of tools using the FileMaker Platform to oversee the entire lifecycle of each project, from identifying door openings in plans, to customizing labels for hardware packs for installers, and documenting the status of every door in the building. “Thanks to our custom app from SmallCo, we handle the same sales volume as companies twice our size, with superior results. It's also simplified our bidding process for larger projects, as our take-offs and job estimates are completed much more quickly.” Their custom application is essential to the success of Cleveland Architectural Hardware.

Automated Fabrication. Armstrong Metalldecken GmbH, a subsidiary of Armstrong World Industries based in Austria, provides innovative and tailored metal ceiling and wall systems. With the company experiencing impressive growth of 31% over the past decade, Value Stream Manager Miodrag Mihajlovic identified the need for a customized application to enhance their production process. Mihajlovic stated, “We needed a system to manage customer orders, oversee inventory, and supply construction sites with pre-sorted ceiling and wall systems ready for installation. Additionally, it was crucial to maintain detailed records of product distribution for efficient support when required. The automation enabled by the custom app has allowed Armstrong to expand its offerings to an increasingly diverse customer base, from Iceland to the United Arab Emirates.
