Book Publishing Apps

Unknown

PressWorks serves academic and trade publishers in North America and Europe. For over twenty years, SmallCo has collaborated with book publishers, beginning with Harvard University Press, The University of Chicago Press, and Cork University Press. The former Director of UNC Press at Chapel Hill once told the SmallCo team, “Publishing involves many details, none of which seem particularly important—until they are.” In response, SmallCo developed the PressWorks suite of apps to meticulously manage and care for these details, ensuring they are readily accessible when needed. Each app has a specific function: Metadata Mavens utilize the PressWorks XML App to generate custom ONIX feeds; Editorial Assistants rely on the PressWorks Document Engine to streamline author communication; and editors use the Author App to enhance their management of author requests.

Custom App Dev for Site & Materials Management

Cleveland Architectural Hardware

Phased Construction Site & Materials Management Al Mandalfino sums up his business succinctly: “I sell doorknobs.” However, Cleveland Architectural Hardware provides not only doorknobs but also a comprehensive array of door hardware, including the custom-built doors themselves. Al’s company supplies and oversees the installation of doors in major local venues such as the Cleveland Cavaliers’ basketball arena, the adjacent Cleveland Indians’ ballpark, the Browns’ football stadium by the lake, and throughout the vast Cleveland Clinic. The intricacies involved with doors are significant. They can open inward or outward, be left- or right-handed, come in single or double configurations, vary in height, possess different fire safety insulations, and feature both automatic and remote openers, all while coordinating complex keying systems that range from master keys to multiple levels of grand-master keys. All of this requires careful tracking. “We must manage vendor orders, control inventory, supply construction sites in phases with door hardware organized for easy installation, and meticulously log the movement of each door to ensure we can provide replacement parts and re-keying throughout the door's lifespan. We recognized early on that our small team would benefit from a custom application.” Developing a Custom App SmallCo created a suite of tools using the FileMaker Platform to oversee the entire lifecycle of each project, from identifying door openings in plans, to customizing labels for hardware packs for installers, and documenting the status of every door in the building. “Thanks to our custom app from SmallCo, we handle the same sales volume as companies twice our size, with superior results. It's also simplified our bidding process for larger projects, as our take-offs and job estimates are completed much more quickly.” Their custom application is essential to the success of Cleveland Architectural Hardware.

Custom App Dev for Custom Ceilings Company

Armstrong Ceilings & Wall Solutions

Automated Fabrication. Armstrong Metalldecken GmbH, a subsidiary of Armstrong World Industries based in Austria, provides innovative and tailored metal ceiling and wall systems. With the company experiencing impressive growth of 31% over the past decade, Value Stream Manager Miodrag Mihajlovic identified the need for a customized application to enhance their production process. Mihajlovic stated, “We needed a system to manage customer orders, oversee inventory, and supply construction sites with pre-sorted ceiling and wall systems ready for installation. Additionally, it was crucial to maintain detailed records of product distribution for efficient support when required. We quickly recognized that a custom app could significantly improve our team's efficiency.” A Custom App to Streamline Business SmallCo assisted Mihajlovic in developing a tailored app to oversee production, distribution, and ongoing support. “We can now accurately track completed and pending tasks, along with all relevant customer information, requirements, and historical data,” said Mihajlovic. “I took our server offline for maintenance and realized just how dependent we had become on our custom application!” The app also equips sales personnel with the necessary data to deliver prompt and knowledgeable customer service, while providing management with insights into sales, production, and customer support. For his role in implementing the custom app, Mihajlovic was awarded Armstrong’s Gold Award for Excellence. This application logs and manages the dimensions of wall and ceiling products and sends precise instructions to the digitally controlled fabricators that cut and shape them as per orders. The automation enabled by the custom app has allowed Armstrong to expand its offerings to an increasingly diverse customer base, from Iceland to the United Arab Emirates.
