**The Issue** In 1987, Michael Morton was wrongfully convicted of murder and received a life sentence after prosecutors failed to share crucial evidence with his defense team and the judge. After spending 25 years in prison, he was exonerated due to new DNA testing. On March 16, 2013, Texas Governor Rick Perry enacted the Michael Morton Act. However, implementing the law proved to be difficult and lengthy because of the challenges related to collecting digital evidence. **The Solution** To streamline the process of capturing digital evidence, Simpat Tech collaborated with the Texas Conference of Urban Counties to create a Defense portal as part of a comprehensive software suite that also includes law enforcement and prosecutor case management systems. This suite allows law enforcement agencies to submit incidents with relevant digital evidence to the prosecutor’s office, and facilitates automatic or manual access for defense attorneys through the defense portal. **The Outcome** The new software guarantees that defense attorneys have access to the same evidence as prosecutors, which could help avoid future wrongful convictions like that of Michael Morton. One user noted that the time required to provide in-car video to defense attorneys has decreased from as long as three weeks to just minutes or a day.
